அது என்ன கெட்டி மேளம். மாங்கல்யதாரணத்தின்போது 'கெட்டி மேளம்,கெட்டி மேளம்' என்று சொல்கிறார்கள். அதற்குபதில் 'கொட்டு மேளம், கொட்டு மேளம்' என்று சொல்வதுதான் சரி என்று நினைக்கிறேன்.தமிழ் அகராதிப்படி

3. சாமர்த்தியம்
4. கஞ்சத்தனம்
5. அழுத்தம்
6. மிக நன்று!

ஆங்கிலம்:

1. firmness, hardness, strength, durability,solidity

4. close-fistedness
5. profundity
6. (interjection) well done, bravo!

இங்கே எதற்காக கெட்டி மேளம் என்று சொல்ல வேண்டும். சரியான வார்த்த 'கொட்டு மேளம்'. என்று அல்லவா இருக்கவேண்டும். இந்த கெட்டி மேளம் என்ற வார்த்தை அந்த காலத்திலிருந்தே வருகிறது என்று சொல்லிவிடலாம். கோதை நாச்சியார் 'மத்தளம் கொட்ட' என்று தான் பாடிஉள்ளாரே தவிர மத்தளம் கெட்டி என்று பாடவில்லையே. சரி மேலும் இதை பற்றி ஆறாயும்போது

என்று தான் இருக்கிறது. ஆகையால் பண்டிதர்கள் இதை பற்றியும் விவாதித்து எது சரியான வார்த்தை எது என்று முடிவு செய்தால் அடியேனைப்போன்றவர்கள் தெரிந்துகொள்ள முடியுமே?

I think the word கெட்டி is used in the meaning அழுத்தம். The purpose of மேளம் itself is, reportedly, to subdue any talk - by the invitees and others - about any inauspicious subject/s, bad omens like sneezing etc., being subdued by the auspicious sound of the Naadaswaram. At the muhoortham time it is expected to be extra-vigorous - which it happens to be, with the கெட்டி மேளம் instructions from the priest - and hence my opinion is that the word கெட்டி மேளம் is correct and appropriate.

You will notice that in this கெட்டி மேளம் usually one or two swaras are only played very loud and from those a raga or a song is commenced after a few minutes of such loud sounding.

Anyway, the following joke I read today seems relevant here:

'கெட்டி மேளம்' என்பதே சரி. அழுத்தமாக, உறுதியாகக் கொட்டுவதே 'கெட்டி மேளம்' ஆகும்.


'கெட்டி மேளம் கொட்டு' என்று சொல்லலாம்! இந்தப் பாடலின் ஆரம்பத்தில் 'கெட்டி மேளம்'!

An interesting note about the above song. Smt. Nithyasree said in an interview that the song is composed in 'MukhAri' rAgam!!

The notes played in the song are same as MukhAri swarams because the essence of Anandhabairavi while playing 'AnandhamE'

(viz) 'R M G R r G r S' is missing and is usually played as 'r m g r S ; ; ;'! High time vidhwans change the swarams to Anandhabairavi.
