சகுனம், ராகு காலம், எம கண்டம்

My Grand father and then my father believed in சகுனம் and ராகு காலம். I do not know about எம கண்டம்.

When my Grand father left for the court a girl will be sent to check up that there is no bad சகுனம். Then she will come in when Grand father left as she was good சகுனம். When my father left for the office one of us would scout around and tell him to proceed further. Even then there are days when he would come back because of bad சகுனம். rest for a while, drink water and then leave. He was a serious student of Astrology.

About ராகு காலம், it haunted us throughout the the time when we were staying with my father. The most important formula to remember was

"Mother Saw Father Wearing That Turban So."

For the uninitiated this is the formula for remembering Rahu Kalam.

Mother - Monday

Saw - Saturady

Father - Friday

Wearing - Wednesday

That - Thursday

So - Sunday.

Rahu kalam starts at 7.30 A.M and lasts for 1.5 hours. So you calculate rahu kalam for the day.

When we left on a journey and if the train left during Rahu kalam, we had to leave home before that and wait in the station. Many times it meant reaching the station before 2 to 3 hours.

Then there was the business of தெக்கே சூலம் and of course நல்ல நாள். When I left my village for college after vacation all these were seen. Of course there is also a workaround which was used. I take some rice and dal, tie them into a bundle and leave it in some relative's house on நல்ல நாள். Pick it up when I actually left for college. It is called Parasthanam

I do not see சகுனம் or ராகு காலம். About நல்ல நாள், if there a டும்,டும் picture in the Rani Muthu calender , that is good enough for me. But only when I can afford to change the date.

About நல்ல நாள், I got married in the last week of June. What with grahapravesam, Pilgrimage and honeymoon, we reached Bombay toward end of July. In the month of ஆடி. The workaround was to பால் காய்ச்சுfy earlier. It was done when I was still a bachelor. My sister in law came to do it. But she had forgotten to keep the Milk in the frig. So the Milk got spoiled. We never told any of the elders. Now after 40 years of marriage, I think I am safe.

About எம கண்டம், I was blissfully unaware. Then I got a Boss who was particular about எம கண்டம். He never bothered to read my submissions or understand them. But check rahu kalam, yama kandam and sign blindly. I had to check these and present my submissions accordingly.

Whenever we were faced with a difficult to decide situation my mother used to say பகவான் மேலே பாரத்தை போட்டுட்டு பண்ணு. எல்லாம் சரியா வரும். I think she had Wisdom.

Please post your experiences.

Note: This thread is as a result of the discussion about பல்லி சொல் பலன் which we had recently. Really not a serious discussion about சகுனம், ராகு காலம், எம கண்டம். But of sharing experiences.

I liked your anecdote about grahapravesam. Nowadays it is really difficult to follow these rules, particularly where one has to travel by trains at short notice. Though I quitely try to book trains tickets, my wife refers the panchangam & all my plans go awry.
Just before my retirement I had appeared for promotion interview. On the day of interview I was already late & when I was leaving our building sweeper crossed my path with a broom. I was successful in the interview & got promotion.
As you said it is better to pray & proceed with our programme
