ராமேஸ்வரத்தில் மண்டபத்துக்கும் பாம்பனுக்கும் செல்ல கடந்த 1902ம் ஆண்டு ஆங்கிலேயர் ஆட்சி காலத்தில் அறிவிக்கப் பட்டு, இந்த பாலத்தை கட்டி முடிக்க 10 வருடங்கள் ஆனது என்று கூறப்படுகிறது. இதை அடுத்து 1913ம் ஆண்டு டிசம்பர் மாதம் பாலம் கட்டும் பணிகள் முடிவடைந்ததாக தகவல் தெரிய வருகிறது.

எனவே, 1914ம் ஆண்டு ஜனவரி மாதம் ரயில் சோதனை ஓட்டம் நடை பெற்று பிப்ரவரி மாதம் 24ம் திகதி சரக்கு ரயில்
மற்றும் பயணிகள் ரயில் பாம்பன் பாலத்தில் இயக்கப் பட்டது. இப்போது இந்த பாம்பன் பலத்துக்கு 100 வயது ஆகிறது
என்கிற காரணத்தினால் நூற்றாண்டு விழா கொண்டாட்டம் இன்று துவங்கி உள்ளது.

மேலே ரயிலும் கீழே கப்பலும் செல்லும் அளவிற்கு இந்த பாலம் பிரிவதும், சேர்வதும் என்று அமைக்கப் பட்டு
இருப்பதால் சுற்றுலா பயணிகள் அங்கு ஆர்வத்துடன் சுற்றுலா சென்று வருகின்றனர். இந்த கொண்டாட்டம் இன்று
தொடங்கி வருகிற பிப்ரவரி மாதம் 24ம் திகதி நிறைவு விழா நடைபெறுகிறது. இன்றைய துவக்க விழாவை முன்னால்
குடியரசுத் தலைவர் பி ஜே அப்துல்கலாம் துவக்கி வைக்கிறார் என்பது குறிப்பிடத் தக்கது.

இந்த நூற்றாண்டு விழாவின் போது பயணிகளுக்கு என்னென்ன சலுகைகள் வழங்கப்படும் என்கிற தகவல் இன்னமும் தெரிய வரவில்லை"

On the occasion of Centenary Celebrations of the famous Pamban cantilever bridge l wish to share the information that, Pamban Bridge was damaged during the 22-23 December, 1964 Cyclone and rebuilt by the team of engineers under the supervision of Dr E Sreedharan in record period of 46 days.

The Pamban rail bridge will be illuminated with special lighting starting fromJanuary 27 to 29 to mark the inauguration of the centenary celebrations of the bridge. Former President, A P J Abdul Kalam would inaugurate the celebrationsat the Pamban railway station at 12.30pm on January 28, officials from the Madurai railway division said.


Earlier officials had planned to organize the celebrations on February 24, the day when the rail bridge was officially opened for train traffic in 1914. But railway sources said that Abdul
Kalam, who had played an important role in safeguarding the bridge during the gauge conversiontime, was not available during those days. Abdul Kalam had played a key role in safeguarding the bridge when the railways adopted uni-gauge policy and contemplated on dismantling the bridge when the metre gauge section was to be converted into broad gauge.

Besides, thereis uncertainty about the visit of dignitaries including the railway ministersince the Parliament session begins on February 5. Hence, the railway authorities decided to change the celebration pattern by inaugurating the festivities on January 28 which will prolong till February 24 with a closing ceremony.


Divisional railway manager, A K Rastogi said that they will inaugurate the centenary celebrations with Kalam on January 28.

"There would be a series of celebrations for the bridge turning 100 years. The inauguration celebration will include a technical session on the bridge by the Indian Institute of Technology - Madras team which took out the study on its residual life," Rastogi said. Based on the wind and climate conditions,they will work out extending the special lighting throughout the month, he added.

"We are planning to organise a closing ceremony of the centenary celebrations on February 24 and the railway minister has expressed his consent for the visit," he stated.


The division is also planning to release a commemorative stamp but the officials are facing some constraints. The postal department has released a stamp on Pamban Bridge under the title landscape bridges in the year 2007 and they are reluctant to release the stamp during the centenary celebrations since the postal department can do so only after a period of 10 years. "We are taking measures to release the stamp. If it does not work out, we will release postal cover on thebridge for centenary celebrations," Rastogi added.

Thanks for sharing the information.

I just read about Dr. E. Sreedharan in Wikipedia. Though the Railways set a target of six months for the bridge to be repaired, he restored the Bridge in just 46 days. He seems to have been given the Railways Minister’s Award in recognition of his achievement.


The Team of Engineers and the staff responsible both for construction and maintenance deserves congratulations.


I would like to share this article published in The Hindu date:25.02.2013 about Pamban Bridge which is unique in design and a Master Piece

last year i visited rameshswaram.....the journey through pamban was ealy morning while going to rameswaram......while coming

from rameswaram to chennai....its was pleasant evening sunset....i enjoyed very well....its marvellous and awesome....

Dear Sri Balasubramani,

You will be surprised that for all his achievement of rebuilding Pamban Bridge in record time, Dr E.Sreedharan got a Railway award consisting of Rs 100 and an awful looking plaque. Great indeed. Please read the full account of rebuilding this Bridge in the following weblink:

Well, I know two more persons in the team which re-built Pamban Bridge in 1964-65. One my cousin K. Rangarajan, and other my neighbour (Late) G.Venkatrama Iyer, Railway Engineer (Bridges), from whom I have heard first person account of trials and tribulations they had gone through to re-build the Pamban Bridge.

Almost all the girders and tracks were destroyed in the 1964 cyclone; only the central lift bridge was left t; and most of the pillars stood with minor damage. It was a remarkable sight - just the draw bridge standing in the middle of the ocean.

Sridharan is a remarkable man. Unfortunately, his vision of a hanging mono rail transport system demonstrated in goa had not been implemented by any government, despite its many cost-time advantages.
