மார்கழி மாசம் திருவாதிரை நாள் வரப்போகுத&

Today when I peeled off the page in Rani Mutthu calender, I saw that it was மார்கழி 1.

Started singing "மார்கழி மாசம் திருவாதிரை நாள் வரப்போகுது ஐயேனே". I do not remember the rest of the words.

மார்கழி immediately brings to our mind

1. திருவாதிரை. ஆருத்ரா தரிசனம். களி' நைவேத்யம், ஏழு காய் கூட்டு,

2. திருப்பாவை.
மார்கழித் திங்கள் மதிநிறைந்த நன்னாளால் ...

3. Singing Bhajans and going around the village in the morning.

4. Reciting Vishnu Sahasranamam
and going around the village in the evening

I remember running to the Natarajar Sannidhi in the temple in the morning and getting
சாந்து. I liked Kali and the Koottu. When I told my wife about this just after marriage, she told me she could make me Kali any day for tiifin and also the koottu. She did. It was good. But it tasted better on ஆருத்ரா தரிசனம் day.

திருப்பாவை. Oh. Yes. How can I forget this. Remember the time when I had gone home from College during this period. Our temple used to start playing திருப்பாவை.songs at 4.A.M with a loudspeaker. I could never sleep peacefully. It started with மார்கழித் திங்கள் மதிநிறைந்த நன்னாளால் ... Later on I started enjoying this.

We used to sing Bhajans and go round the village when I was very young. The headmaster of the local school was staying in our village. He taught us Bhajans in the evening at the temple. he also led the Bhajan group in the morning. It is not the Bhajans which was the main attraction. But the food. Every house used to take turns in giving breakfast to the bhajan group. Bajji, Sojji and all. This was the main attraction for us.

I have seen the sahasranamam group going around the village. I was not old enough to join the group. I did not know Vishnu Sahasranamam then. This was taught by our Headmaster to the older boys.

The bhajans and sahasranamam stopped when the Headmaster was transferred to some other place. We missed him.

All of us would have very pleasant memories of மார்கழி மாசம். Let us share them.
