Minister of State for Power, Coal and Renewable Energy, Piyush Goyal’s comment at a global conference on environment that “judicial overreach at times does more harm than good” put the government to shame when Supreme Court Judge T. S. Thakur spoke about how courts are held guilty of judicial overreach when they ask the government to “clean up the mess”.
Justice Thakur, took a dig at the government as he said sarcastically, “We all know the Yamuna is very clean,” arousing laughter and applause from the audience at the concluding session of the International Conference on Global Environmental Issues on Sunday. The two-day event was organised by the Ministry of Environment and Forest, the National Green Tribunal, and the Indian Law Institute.
“If we tell the government to clean up the Ganga, Yamuna, we are held guilt of judicial overreach. For 20 years, the government has been cleaning the Ganga. Thousands of crores of rupees have gone down. We all know there is a political slogan which catches much votes and can do so for at least 20 years,” said Justice Thakur.
