“People don’t stop fighting even for worshipping God”

Quoting the famous statement of Karl Marx “Religion is the opium of the masses,” the Madras High Court Bench here on Wednesday criticised people who fight over conduct of temple festivals and spend considerable time, money and energy on prolonging legal battles over how and in what manner should God be worshipped.

Disposing of a writ appeal related to a dispute between two villagers over consecrating a local temple, the First Bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice S. Tamilvanan said: “Masses do not stop fighting even for worshipping God. At times, it results in the administrative authorities locking up the temples so that God can rest in peace.”

The writ appeal had been filed by the residents of Krishnapuram village in Virudhunagar district seeking a direction to the residents of Kovilpatti village to accept donations from the appellants for the consecration of Kaliamman temple scheduled to be held on February 8 and 9.

The appellants also insisted on issuance of receipts for donations made by them

it is very sad. just see how hindus are united. this helps other religious leaders take avantage and try convertion. earlier iyer and iyengar fight was there. God save hindusim - srinivasan

Here in pune, two groups/denomination of Christians fought over the church, damaged furniture and started demolishing the walls. And a few seriously injured. Hindus at least stop with fist fights and slogans, others kill and grievously injure. It is nothing to do with Hinduism or unity. Only a patient intervention by the elders of the fighting groups will lead to a lasting peace. Nobody will easily give up their rights.

Let the god RIP has escaped scrutiny! Other than Hindus would have raised hell on this inappropriate and injudicious remark!

Dear Sir,

I think the reporter does not know the meaning of 'Rest in peace'! :)

Some years back, people read 'The Hindu' to improve their English!

See the plight now! :tsk:

also see, in the name of Allah, shias and sunnys fight to death. - srinivasan

Fanatics are in all religions and when huge money is involved, this kind of fight will surely arise! :fencing:

Does that mean the ultimate goal of religion is not God-realization but self-gratification!
