1. Do some medications by themselves cause weight gain or loss?

2. Why can't they make spectacles for near-sightedness thin? For ex, I wear power -10 glasses which are super-thick and so I wear contact lenses to avoid glasses. I wonder if they can make someone see clearly with these contact lenses, why can't they make glasses also come thin for high power?

Any takers for the q's?

1. Yes, I think it is possible for any drug, though I am not a doctor. For example smoking causes weight loss, and smoking cessation causes weight gain. Not that I am advocating weight gain.

2. You can try high refractive index glasses, which will make them somewhat thinner. You can also try the Lasik procedure.

Thanks, Biswa.

On point 2: I would love to get Lasik done, however since it involves cutting and reshaping the lens in the eye, and my power being too high, it would mean they have to cut the lens and reshape it a lot which is deemed risky and doctors told me they cannot do the Lasik on me. Hate my glasses! :)

Dear Jayashree,

1. Some oral insulin and
thyroid correction tablets DO cause weight gain, from the experience with my group of people.

One of my friends used to say, 'Just by SEEING a laddu, I will gain 100 gms of weight!'

2. The thickness of lens is inversely proportional to the money paid! Hope you got it! :)

Anyway, since you seem to hate glasses, better stick on to contact lenses. :peace:

1)Some medications cause weight gain for example Prednisolone(a steroid) and hormonal based medications like Contraceptive Pills and Injectable Contraception and certain epileptic medication.

Even though the newer contraceptives claim no weight gain but invariably some mild weight gain is also there.

But usually unless one is on steroids or epileptic medication..most people tend to blame medication for weight gain when the actual reason is lack of activity.

The famous "complain" people claim is that they were thin and after taking IV fluids during delivery they gained weight!LOL

Coming to Lasik...if one is not a pledged eye donor than you can have Lasik done if you want it.

I only have astigmatism and becos of older age now I use reading glasses ....when I drive at night I use another pair of glasses that corrects my astigmatism..otherwise if I am not reading or driving at night I do not wear glasses ....but if you ask me frankly speaking I wont dare ever consider Lasik cos we only have 1 pair of eyes..unless one needs Lasik as treatment I feel its better to stick to glasses or contact lenses.

Further more I am a pledged organ donor and if I do Lasik the corneal sides will be thinned off an not suitable for donation upon my death.

So JR...do this..when you have to go out anywhere you can use your contact lenses and otherwise use your glasses.

A supplementary Question:

Will the donee of the eye be required to use the glasses as was used by the donor..

For example... say till you were 45 years of age, you did not require glasses for normal activity or for reading. After 45th year, you started using glasses for reading.

If a young boy say of 8 years uses the eyes donated by you, would he be requiring reading glasses straight away?

In 'eye donation" only the cornea is harvested.

Short-sightedness and Long Sightedness is not related to the cornea. It depends on lens converging ability, size of eye ball in terms of length and actions of ciliary muscles.

Only astigmatism is caused by an irregular shaped cornea or lens.

So nope..the 8 year old wont need to wear reading glasses.

Dear DR. Renuka,

Do you know if Fenofibrate the medicine used for short-term management of elevated Triglycerides is supposed to cause weight loss? (without any effort, that is)...

Dear JR,

I wont answer this question cos if the answer is YES....people will start abusing this drug or even over dose themselves to lose weight .......if I say NO then those who need it for their elevated Triglycerides (TG)might stop taking it for fear of weight gain.

Sometimes ignorance is bliss...and the main concern here should be lowering the TG .
Regular exercise with regulated diet should always as usual be the mainstay treatment for anyone regardless of Cholesterol or TG levels.

But anyway I feel some related studies are available online.
