A whopping 66% of businesses in the country believe that some form of bribery is acceptable, in spite of increased regulatory actions and public outcry against corruption, according to a survey.
As many as 80% believe that corruption is still widespread, with 52 per cent saying offering gifts to win businesses is "justifiable to help a business survive", while 27% justify cash payments, the survey on fraud and corruption by Ernst & Young said.
Interestingly, 35% of respondents also believe that "conformity to their organisation's anti-bribery and anti-corruption policies would harm their competitiveness in the market".
"As many as 80% of respondents state that corruption is widespread in the country, while 66% state that some form of bribery such as giving cash gifts is acceptable," EY India said.
Further, 57% said increased regulation in "is augmenting challenges for the growth or success of their business".
The survey interviewed 3,800 people from 38 countries across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa. The findings revealed that 60% of Indian respondents, however, "agree that regulatory activity in their sector had a positive impact on ethical standards".
"The spurt of change being driven by regulators has undoubtedly made a positive impact on business environment," said the survey.

Is there a hope that anyone can eradicate corruption?

This is not surprising. Worldwide human beings are engaged in superstition, fear and greed. At a time when many were doing hard work in a farms or otherwise, the act of work that had to be done everyday had purifying effect on people. Steven Covey in his book on 7-habits of highly effective people has done a good analysis on this.

The religions of the world today propagate a delusional world order an order of magnitude more and promote fear & greed. India is not an exception with its diversity of superstitions and godmen!

The hope might have been the foundation of Vedic knowledge but that is hardly appreciated by the masses who are deluded into astrology, superstition, and 'quick fix parihara'. Corruption is justified as needed for efficiency and is widespread in day to day life in India.

Western people are even worse practicing corruption at higher levels of greed and have reduced that to a science. They master cheating at any cost through financial systems they created worldwide, campaign contributions that determine so called 'elections' and environmental damage done in the name of economy. There is limited conscience of people creating meat (with factory farms) and in those people that consume them worldwide.

The universe never punishes but reacts to levels of adharma by cataclysmic changes which will restore balance or wipe out humanity for a while.
Through history dharma and adharma was in equilibrium, we do not know if that equilibrium is tilted more to adharma. We do have more information readily available that exposes adharmic issues.

All we can do is to lead principled centered living.
