What impact will it have on bilateral relations, trade between India & U.S..Will it help us in getting more Visas for our Techies?

OK, we are far better than Pakistan and North Korea...Will we get the MFN tag and associated benefits?

72 per cent Americans view India favourably: Poll - The Economic Times

Seventy-two per cent Americans view India favorably - a four per cent increase from last year - while North Korea has become the country least liked in the US, according to an annual Gallup poll.

The poll also found that only 17 per cent Americans view Pakistan favorably, while China fares better with 43 per cent Americans having a favorable opinion of the country.

The Gallup's 2014 World Affairs poll found that 72 per cent Americans had a favorable opinion of India compared to 68 per cent in 2013.

This pushes India's favorability ratings up by four per cent compared to last year.

The poll comes after the Khobragade episode that soured ties between India and the US.

Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade was arrested on December 12 last year in New York on charges of making false declarations in a visa application for her maid.

The diplomat was strip searched and held with criminals, triggering a row between the two sides with India retaliating by downgrading privileges of certain category of US diplomats.

The poll ranked North Korea as the least favorable of 22 countries included in the survey, with only 11 per cent having a favourable opinion of the nation.

The results were based on telephone interviews conducted between February 6 to 9, with a random sample of 1,023 adults, aged 18 and older, living in all 50 US states and the District of Columbia.

North Korea took the bottom spot from Iran, whose rating rose from 9 per cent last year to 12 per cent this year.

North Korea's favorability has not exceeded 15 per cent since 2002, consistently making it one of the lowest rated. But this is the first time since 2004
that it has been alone in last place.

North Korea now immediately trails Afghanistan (14 per cent), Syria (13 per cent), and Iran (12 per cent).

Americans have much more positive attitudes toward South Korea, with 64 per cent viewing the
country favorably.

Canada remained the most popular foreign country for Americans, with 93 per cent viewing it favorably, a two per cent jump from last year.

Other countries favored most by Americans included Great Britain (90 per cent), Germany (81 per
cent), Japan (80 per cent) and France (78 per cent)

I live in USA and my personal experience is better than that.
But on average the 75% seems about right.

While favorability ratings is a measure of attitude towards a country it does not translate always to the ability to influence actions.

India does not have a lobby and Indians *largely * lack a sense of unity and purpose that is larger than their 'immediate' needs. There are exceptions but they are more anecdotal.

The granting of Visa has more to do with businesses and their influence to get 'tech coolies' for cheaper price than anything any nation does.

Israel is an example of a country that has a very strong lobby.

When India announced back during Clinton era that it is a nuclear nation many became aware that India lacked the lobby power to limit immediate sanctions.

When Senior Bush and his team used loan guarantees as a leverage against Israel in negotiations around the so called peace process, the Jewish lobby with its vast reach and power was able to provide the state of Israel a a US citizen funded loan guarantees of about billion dollars - all within a week. That symbolic power is a show of strength and unity.

Caveat: I am not an international diplomat (not even an arm chair one ) - My comments have to be viewed in that context.

Does India (or Indian Government) need to do what other conutries do (like lobbying and sometimes bordering on unethical (at least seemingly) actions)? Sould India not maintain its integrity (however little it may be perceived to have). If India and Indians maintain a certain level of moral (even when definitions of morality vary), intellectual integrity that will stand a long way among other nations - instead of a short term gain.

My two paisa/cents/ of opinion

Good thought and this two paisa may go a long way though I have not seen a Paisa in decades :-)

Lobbying is not corrupt the way it is set up though corrupt actions are possible in every system. Lobbying is a formal way of creating impact and usually access to influential politicians require one to be well connected. That takes time and effort.

Jewish lobby is strong because of the strong support of American Jews who are ready to take collective risks and donate.

Modern India is known for corruption as a way of life. In terms of corruption index it leads the League of Nations.

Our teachings may emphasize Dharma and highest standards of integrity but the experience at both individual and collective level of Modern India by outsiders is largely shaped by the extent of corruption at all levels that they experience.

In my book morality is a bad word since it is often used by some group to control others.

First step for India to do is to get the silent majority to not condone corruption.

I agree with your view.
I say India should do a lot more, and PIO's should join in and work towards that goal.

this appears to be an issue concerning PIOs ,american indians and some NRIs. more than the average indian. india sends some tech . coolies and some starved for western education to us and canada. some send money to india for various reasons.
india is a large market with spending power. when they have a need american would like india. corrupt india would suit americans . they would prefer to buy indians than do honest marketing. nor they have any feeling for democracy anywhere or human rights unless it hurts their business interests . they do not mind dictators or kings if they have oil and give them that they will be happy.
indians in US can take care of themselves. they need not play an advisory role and tell us to be less corrupt for their sake. they can very well return to india if they cannot put up with the americans. we are happy as we are . we lived without american support for over 60 years when they preferred pakistan. we will emerge stronger without them without their cola, pepsi, fast foods ,GM cropsand sundry things. technology which is their strong point has got spread over most of the world and there are cheap alternatives from south korea ,japan and china. tamericans have damagedindia since we went into globalisation madly and got hurt by 2008 mortgage crisis- a shit product of american capitalism . americans can only damage the world.

Krishji,
That is a whole lot of cribbing.
We live in a connected world, but we are an island by ourselves. We can isolate ourselves as much as we want individually, but as a society we need each other. We may hate our neighbor or be jealous of them but have to live with them.
If we have to live with them then we may as well be friendly with them, as it might come in handy.
What TKSji said was that we should make the best use of the situation, and I agree with that.
