Not long ago, what I am narrating is 55 years ago - every year (Dec - Jan : corresponding to tamil month Margazhi), two bullock cart loads of paddy, two bags of black gram, one bag of green gram, about 70 Kgs of tamarind, 200 coconuts, "karunai kizhangu" and few other vegetables will arrive at our residence - travelling about 40 Kms from the village, where my grandfather had the farm. I still remember, father would receive the cart drivers, Raman & Krishnan, enquire the well being of their family, asking mother to prepare and serve hot coffee, asking them to feed / water the bullocks to take rest. The labourers will do that, go to the nearby river or tank, take bath. By that time, food would be ready and it will be served in plantain leaves - I remember - they will consume higher quantity of rice with special liking for "Sambar"! We, youngsters would watch with curiosity.
After an hour, at the auspicious time, the load from the carts will be unloaded. The wooden "Paththaayam" (paddy storage box) would be cleaned, wiped with wet and dry cloths, sandal paste and cumcum will be "painted". The first lady of the house will open the first paddy bag, take one measure of paddy with her hands, perform a prayer and deposit it in the "paththaayam" - which will be followed by other members of the family with due reverence. Next one hour, the entire paddy load would be stored amidst thick smoke like dust engulfing the area. By that time, the afternoon coffee would be ready and will be served to the two villagers. When bid farewell, new dhoti, towel, money etc. will be presented and they leave will all smiles !
Really nostalgic days - we have lost all these. The lands were sold in view of the repeated labour problems (thank to Communists) and one after another, all siblings got migrated to cities / towns, buying even drinking water !
