The Indian goverment has announced Bharat Ratnas for former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and freedom fighter Madan Mohan Malaviya. Here are 9 things you may not know about the second man in this list, Malaviya, who was deemed to be awarded the highest civilian award by Modi during his election campaigning days.

Malaviya was born on 25th December, 1861, in a Brahmin family based in Allahabad. He had seven siblings.

Malaviya's early learning in a Mahajani school influenced him to begin a career as a freedom fighter and politician in 1886.

Mahatma Gandhi considered Malaviya as an elder brother and even gave him the title, "The Maker of India".

Malaviya brought the Banaras Hindu University into existence by playing a key role in the passing of a bill. In 1916, the famous Indian university was formally established.

In 1928, Malaviya joined India's protest against the Simon Commission, a British panel that recommended communal electorates in the country before independence. Tensions between Hindus and Muslims were rising as a consequence.

Malaviya is known to be the person who popularized the slogan, "Satyamev Jayate", after which a TV show hosted by Aamir Khan is now named. Malaviya is always held in high esteem for his efforts.

Madan Mohan Malaviya saved 'Hindustan Times' when the newspaper was facing a downfall and was about to shut down in the 1930s. The 'Hindi' version of the newspaper, which is now owned by the Birla family, was launched thanks to his efforts. Malaviya even figures on a 5-rupee Indian coin.

There is even a postage Stamp in honor of Malaviya

A daily aarti is performed at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar, which was initiated by Malaviya back then during his times.
