This is something very personal! But I thought of sharing this with a larger group!

My parents had been to a marriage in our mother's maternal side...Normally they do not travel...But as the relative had insisted my mother reluctantly pulled my dad & the rest in the family to attend the marriage in Bengaluru....

The TB boy was marrying a Gujarati girl in pomp and show

On the day of marriage the guests was served variety of Gujarathi dishes...As my mother was never used to Gujarathi dishes she just had some curd (which also had sugar)...Also she did not like the masala in it...Even the sambar tasted awful...During the function she fainted as her blood sugar had come down

She came back to normalcy after about some excruciating moments!

And then my sister rushed to the kitchen to prepare some curd rice and give it to my mother!

That's the story of an elderly TB lady being forced to eat some alien food which her tongue resisted!

Have we become culturally degraded and debased not to consider the needs of the elderly or the ones who are traditional in food choices!

Atleast the bridegroom side who has invited the octogenarians should have thought over this!

A TB has become alien in his/her own community marriage!

I hope your mother has recovered.
I understand to an extent your predicament. I too only prefer TB food. I too have medical needs. So I prepare well. I control my medicine, I make arrangement for my food. I go to all festival or occasion and do not create a scene.
It is very difficult to control the world, it is possible to control yourself.

People with diabetics, must know the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Must have a banana or something in hand. Must eat small portions, and avoid large meal so that you do not go into sugar spikes. Must read up on precautions for diabetic person. Remember we are guest and we must not become the center of attention.

This was in Bangluru, I was in chennai for a TB-TB wedding and they served pineapple Rasam, we had to make our way to Sarvanabhavan.

But your post and the title is over the top, for an open forum.

She did not realise it as she was busy chatting with people whom she is meeting after several years...

Dear Ganesh,

In my circle of relatives, the super seniors are given special food which will suit them and even if the dining hall is in

the floor above / below (happens in many wedding halls), table chair arrangement is done in a corner of the same hall

for these super seniors. In this case, the bridegroom's party failed to take care of the seniors. So sad!

In one tambram wedding in my friend's circle , the groom's party gave a long list of medicines that the senior members

take daily, along with 'seer' list! Such people also exist! :dizzy:

Moral of this incident: Never forget your tummy when you are in a chatting group!
I always insist the diabetics to carry a small water bottle + a pack of biscuits in their bag, wherever they go! :peace:

Yes..It requires special effort to take care of the elderly...But these basic courtesies we cannot expect now...I remember madi samayal used to be quite common even 10 years back...But no more...Also this was an IC & Inter state wedding..

Ganesh Ji,

You are right. In some families they invite everyone in their list of close relatives, friends, neighbours, ex-colleagues, etc and try to turn the event into a great together. But the unfortunate thing is, while serious and minute attention is paid to every other aspect, not much attention is paid to catering, the menu, which will be approved as a matter of routine. No attention is paid to the health condition of elders, climatic condition, food habits, etc

Since, it is a one day celebration, even those who attend such wedding held outstation, will feel the side effects of taking usual dishes only on their return back to home.

In my personal experience, whenever I attend outstation weddings, instead of suffering at the hands of such caterers who have least thought over seniors, I used to skip the lunch or dinner in the interest of my own health.

It is the responsibility of the host to protect the interest of guests, their comfort, health, etc

It is a tough decision, Bala Sir!

Great of you to have some consideration for the health!

Self discipline is the best medicine!

Times have changed! So it is good for the super seniors to bless the couple and send some gift! :)

Making weddings celebrations senior citizen friendly is one of my primary concerns in our family .

In two recent family weddings in our family we had more than twenty senior citizens over 70 years . I even had a 90 plus relative.

I saw to it that accomodation in hotels ,marriage halls, transport and food were taken care to suit them.

I did not have a single person falling sick. All reached back after the wedding safely

I am diabetic .

I believe in self control.

It is not only food habits. The mental makeup also matters.

Of course it is wise to keep some sugar for emergencies.

But I have hardly done this.

I only move away from distressing situations/people who create disharmony.

life has a lot to offer . diabetes is a minor issue.lol

Wonderful Krishji! Welcome to the forum after a hiatus!

Taking care of elderly in a marriage requires special skill! Kudos to you! Did elders had a special food...Where they made to climb stairs for food?

firstly , the elders were lodged in hotels with a lift . there were coffeemakers in room with sugar/sugarfree additives. wedding halls had ramps to facilitate entries .

food was served -non spicy in ground floor in the wedding hall for those in eighties though no special diet as such so that there was no need to climb floors. the wedding hall also had lift-though some got stuck once

in it due to overloading.lol .these things still happen with best efforts. ...

As an alternate facility of room service was there in hotel to take care of specific requirements of seniors.they could skip some ceremonies and rest in their hotel rooms as an option

we had two weddings in the family in the same week -both were deliberately planned in same city so that senior citizen do not make multiple journeys from far off

places.

we had also engaged an agency to take care of specific requirements of senior citizen to escort them to wedding hall and back and cater to their specific needs

Excellent arrangements to take care of the elderly...With elderly population set to rise among the TB's these should be emulated by others too as much as possible

All this wisdom I have got after some bad experiences in eighties.

in one family wedding, one lady in eighties who was there to attend grand daughters wedding got a heat stroke in delhi heat and expired on the morning of wedding
one sambandhi distributing wedding cards of son in chennai heat also passed away leading to postponement of wedding by six months.

One more lady, a relative got a heart attack died in long distance delhi chennai train . She was going there to attend a family wedding.

now , no senior citizen from my family is put into trains.only flights.marriage only in large metros with good weather in may -june

A big no to any senior citizen staying in wedding halls. only AC rooms in hotels.always provide escort facilities for them and keep continuous watch on them

always doctors in attendance. I make it possible for doctor friends/relatives to attend weddings.

also I try to ensure number of persons attending wedding is small so that personal care can be given to those present .

Ideal! Not an issue with our TB...With nuclear families with small sizes assembling 2 dozen close people is itself a tough task..And the elderly among them can then be given special care...But it has to be planned and not left to chance as you have done it
