A visit to varanasi

I have just returned from a visit to varanasi.

Great changes since last time.

First , roads very clean -swach bharat in action.

Transport-lots of battery operated e rickshaws and ola cars have made an appearance.

I had steam boat operated tour of the ghats [there are sixty five of them . Only a few are well known]

The boat could be hired to go from ghat side to opposite side land where priests from north and andhra are readily available to perform any rituals.

There are excellent arrangements for women with covered facilities for dress change.

andhras constitute the biggest numbers after the northerners there.

Many shops selling banarsi sarees have both telugu and hindi speaking shop attendants

I made a separate visit by boat to witness the evening aarthi from the boat to avoid the crowds at dashashwamedha ghat. A great spectacle.

Went to both harish chandra ghat and manikarnika ghats to see the cremation facilities there.

Both have electric facilities also. The latter is open round the clock. Looked from a distance Dom rajas house there.

My wife got fascinated by rudraksha malas .Picked a few of them along with gangajal vessels.

The evening aarthi at the ghat was colourful lasting about 90 minutes.A great visual delight with singing in sanskrit.and lighted diyas.

those witnessing the aarthi could leave their lighted diyas in water

One could see also bodies burning at a distance in manikarnika ghats lighting up the skies.

Some excellent hotels have come up in town. I stayed in one decent 4 star not costing too much about 6-7 km from the ghats.

Varanasi airport though 30 km from city is an excellent one.

Varanasi is getting attractive for foreigners and NRIs with good facilities.

Monsoon played truant and there were only light showers. A bit humid and hot otherwise.

A different experience.

Thanks for sharing Krishji . My cousin had been there in the end of May and he also told Varanasi is quite neat and far better than the way it is wrongly projected in certain sections of the media . Congrats to PM Modi and hope all the Holy Cities in India are kept clean ( inspite of the heavy rush they have ) and hope many people get employment in manitaining these Holy cities clean .

Dear Krish44,
So, Mr. modi has seriously started to carryout his promises, It appears essential things have been taken up first, that gives satisfaction esp. TB s can visit Kasi/ gaya & perform Pithur Shrardham without hassles. It confirms to me that Andraites are really religious minded & monied people & do not mind donations to temples, They have natural unity as well , as I could confirm this with my real experience,in U.s Florida ,to which I have visited 4.times already & currently 5th. the temples in Orlando & other smaller cities have Temples constructed in the last 3 decades . Andhras are donating thousands of $ and a few of Tamil contribute to their mite , mostly by handsome earning Doctors.

Priests are from Andhra & from Gujarat , who cater for majority here ( we know that Gujarathis have settled in all the U,S, states ) They know Tamil & Tamilians can perform Pooja/ srardam etc perfectly . What else we need ?

Let Kashi regain its lost glory courtesy our PM..All religious places should be maintained well...Recently TN did an excellent job during Mahamaham...Kumabakonam which is a land of temples is equally well maintained

Continuing my post, I went to kasi vishwanath temple and kala bhairavan temple.

One has to enter thru byelanes . There is a long queue with huge police presence every step.

There are no special Queues with higher payment. So far a change , all treated alike.

Yet,if someone known to police there or with political clout can skip the queue.[but it rare].

Most shops in the lane outside keep your shoes, mobile etc. some have lockers for extra safety.

Archana materials cost a pittance.

It took me an hour to go in and return.

In addition to vishwanath, there is deity of Annapurna.

Weather was a bit unfriendly. Humid and hot 32 degrees celsius.

Luckily there were no touts promising special seva unlike the ghats.

I liked the way this temple is being managed.

Dear Mr. Krish, I am doubly happy to read your familiarity of Orlando Temple/ priests. We are residing in Cape Canaveral, close to beach, since my Son-in-law is an Engineer running the Engg Firm for the last 28 years, getting orders, including NASA & his Cape Design Engg is doing well.
very peaceful place , close to Beach, enjoying Rocket Launches at close distance from beach .
Rest when we write more.
