AAP's free water sop to elude the poor, may result in wastage: experts

The AAP government’s move to supply up to 20,000 litres of free water to every household every month will not cover a vast chunk of Delhi because of infrastructural deficiencies. The water sop will leave out most of those living in slums, resettlement and unauthorised colonies. Experts also fear that the ‘freebie’ will devalue the scarce resource and lead to wastage and diversion.

The subsidy, which comes with the rider that consumption over 20,000 litres would mean payment in full for the entire supply, will reach all 18 lakh metered households. But AAP’s own assessment says 14 lakh households do not have piped connections.

But the government is hopeful.

I agree that it would not be the first time that a party has failed to deliver on its election promise.

Should illegal encroachment, and law breakers be permitted to have legal government services? I know it will be difficult to deny such services, because of humanitarian needs and vote bank politics.

But because of allowing encroachments and illegal occupation of land, governments can not allocate any resources. Common law abiding citizens have to subsidize these law breakers. City and municipalities can not plan for infrastructures, causing massive pollution. The cost for law abiding people is abnormally high adding to corruption.

This has to be recitifed first .

It is a welcome move for the people of delhi who have been paying inflated power and water bills.

One has to live in delhi to realise the importance of this measure.

water is a basic right . all households should get a miimum amount of free water for sustaining .

what is promised free is 33 buckets of water per day. if one uses more than that one pays 800 plus.it is only a small subsidy reaching directly the people without middle men

as far is electricity is concerned , most use about 1000 rupees worth of power per month except in four months of summer when it shoots to minimum 3 to 4k due to

AC.

I am talking of an average family of 3or4.

here again the power subsidy is 500 pm for 8 months and about 1500 to 2000 in summer months.

so a maxm of 1300 subsidy for 8 months and about 2500 to 3000 in summer 4 months

we are talking simply of 20k per year for all.

it will definitely ease the life of all poor and middle class in these days of high food ,vegetable and milk prices

but what many do not realise is that many west ans south delhi colonies do not get this much water due to haryana not commissioning the water feeding canals.they

depend on tankers controlled by water mafia . govt tankers do not service them

similarly some poor colonies do not have pipelines to home[slums] or metered connections. they are dependant on street tap water or mafia tankers.these need to get

fixed .they will get a good chance with a new govt which feels for them as it is pro poor.

Ideally speaking water is basic RIGHT.

Where does it say that governments should provide for clean water without cost?
Every right has to be balanced with responsibility.
A right without responsibility is a gift, but somebody else has to pay for the gift. Who pays? Ultimately the law abiding tax payer foots the bill. Government subsidies and sop have to be paid. So it is basically it is economic redistribution of wealth. How long should economic responsibilities be tolerated. Let us say we give subsidy for this generation, because the circumstances were beyond their control.
Why must we allow this irresponsibility to be carried to next generation? (this argument is true for all countries and is not exclusive to India).

It is clear that transformation from socialist to market economy has made the poor and lower middle class and the retired depend on govt subsidy . upto 50 percent of population of delhi is feeling the pinch of high power and water bills. The discoms have cooked up their accounts and over charged and are blocking CAG audit of their accounts

what this new govt is doing is a well directed subsidy without middlemen reaching directly the end user

this is much better than other welfare schemes such as widow or old age pension where the petty govt officials, politicians or pradhans of poor areas pocket a

percentage of funds.it is an open secret that the pradhans collect a hefty cut out of people desiring to have these pension . it is not possible to get iit without them

hi

nothing comes for free....no free lunch....somebody has to pay for this....who will pay?.....lets wait and see...
