I received this through a forwarded email. I share it here because it appears to be a useful info:

LPG gas cylinder users please share this information widely
LPG consumers are covered under insurance of 40 lakh against any LPG Cylinders related Mishaps!! DID YOU KNOW?

Every year, India sees its fair share of LPG cylinder mishaps, causing loss of life, limb and material assets. While most of us know how to avoid accidents, few know that we have Rs.40 lac risk cover in case of damage to life and property due to cylinder explosion!

"Around 10,000 incidents of cylinder explosions take place in different part of the country every year. Instances of death in such incidents are low, but cylinder explosions cause maximum damage to houses and properties, besides Injury to people.

However, most companies have not seen a single Insurance claim from citizens in years. Given the low level of awareness, it’s not a surprise.

Customers are TOTALLY unaware, and unfortunately, the LPG Service Providers (viz Indane, HP etc) too are naturally not inclined to educate their consumers!! Nor is it mentioned in any of the Papers/Documents given by the LPG dealer (SV-service voucher or the Blue Book or the Receipt etc)!! ~~ The LPG companies and the Govt are conveniently not advertising this Fact and Order deliberately. As per him, this amounts to concealment of facts and also is bad in the eyes of law being a malpractice amounting to great savings to Oil & Gas companies by way of cheating the Public.

Leave alone simple homemakers, even well-read professionals have little clue of this "hidden benefit". The staff at the gas agency never informed me “that’s the most common reaction of all consumers.

Bhanwar Singh Chauhan, a senior advocate, confirmed that customers are insured from the time they buy an LPG connection. "If a customer is kept in the dark or the LPG company dithers in processing the Claims, then they can complain about it in the consumer court and even file a petition against the agencies concerned for fraud and misconduct. In the event of accident. All registered LPG consumers are covered under an blanket Insurance policy taken by the PSU Oil Companies."

Insurance agents said it is very easy to get the claim - informs cops and gas agency immediately on occurrence of an accident with the full damage details, insist for an FIR and an acknowledgement from the LPG Dealer, Lodge a written Claim with the estimated Financial loss/damage, wait for survey by insurance officials and soon you will get the claim amount.

In case of the unfortunate event of an accident, the customer must immediately inform the distributor in writing. The distributor then informs the concerned Oil Company and the Insurance Company about the same. The distributor will offer assistance to the customer in completing the formalities of insurance claims arising out of the accident.

All it means that if you are a LPG user your life is insured in case of an accident for up to Rs 40 lakhs, and another 10 lakhs for property / material damage, thus a max of up to 50 lakhs.

In addition to the above, all LPG distributors also have Third Party Liability Insurance to cover losses to others viz to pay up for any other colateral loss too !!

important useful INFORMATION for WIDE CIRCULATION, in Public Interest

Sir,

Thanks for sharing this information.

I stumbled upon the following news item during my search on Google.

"LPG cylinders come with R 40 lakh risk cover

While most us know how to avoid accidents, few know that we have Rs. 40 lakh risk cover in case of damage due to cylinder explosion!

“Around 100 incidents of cylinder explosions take place in different part of the city every year. Instances of death in such incidents are low, but cylinder explosions cause maximum damage to houses and commercial institutions,” informed Ishwar Lal Jat, chief fire officer, adding that most people don't claim this insurance amount.

In fact, companies have not seen a single insurance claim from Jaipur in years. Given the level of awareness, it's not a surprise.
Customers unaware

Most homemakers were completely shocked when DNA told them about the insurance cover available on LPG cylinders. “I never knew that such damages could be claimed from the gas agency,” said Varsha Singh.

Leave alone simple homemakers, even well-read professionals seem to have little clue of this “hidden benefit”. “I did not know that we get insurance in case an LPG cylinder explodes.

The staff at the gas agency never informed me,” said Amit Agarwal, a chartered accountant who recently got a gas connection.
Ignorance pays only the insurers

Every month, nationalised insurance companies get lakhs of rupees as premium and this amount increases constantly with an ever rising number of ignorant consumers, each of whom are covered in part by the Oriental Insurance Company and the gas agency concerned.

“We received Rs26 lakh as monthly premium from a single gas agency in Jaipur, a city which has more than 400 gas agencies,” an agency owner said.

Adding that in the two decades since he's been running the gas agency, not a single customer has claimed insurance despite several mishaps.

Everyone know the difference an asterix at top of a 'SALE' poster can make. So goes for your eligibility to claim insurance.

“The amount of insurance payable varies according to the installments deposited by the agency. Also, if an accident is caused by cylinder explosion where accessories used were original and ISI approved, then customers can claim damages; otherwise not,” said a senior manager with one of the leading government-run insurance companies.

Thanka Vaagmiji for sharing this useful info . One thing we have to be careful when we open a new cylinder is to lookout for washer and sometimes the washer is not there or the washer is faulty and therefore lot of gas leaks and it is dangerous and we need to get it rectified from a gas mechanic before use . All Gas Companies have listed few precautions to avoid Gas leaks and we must follow them . Anyway this insurance thing was not known to me and good that you posted this article .I will share it with other close family members and friends of mine .

Dear Krishna,

I always insist the LPG delivery person to fix the regulator in the new cylinder to check for any possible leak.

He will change the washer immediately if needed. We should also check the expiry date of the cylinder.

Today I booked HP gas cylinder at 9:45 through IVRS; the cylinder was delivered at 11:15. The receipt contained my booking time, date and booking no. and subsidy amount of Rs. 183. Fast service.

And carried the instruction: Please check cylinder.
