[h=1]Activists demand removal of almanac from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University weather guide[/h]COIMBATORE: Members of the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam (DVK), Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam, Social Democratic Party of India, Tamilar Viduthalai Iyakkam, People's Union for Civil Liberties and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi staged a demonstration in Coimbatore on Monday to protest against the inclusion of almanac in the weather forecast guide published by the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

Over 70 protesters staged the demonstration in front of the Red Cross building here and demanded removal of the almanac from the guide.

The protesters enacted a scene portraying scientists seeking help of sages for weather forecast.

"It is laughable that a university that teaches science and run by scientists is providing weather forecast details based on almanac. In the 77 page book on weather forecast, annual rainfall predictions based on 14 different almanacs have been printed. And a Dharmapuri-based astrologer's weather prediction occupies four pages in the guide," DVK president Kolathur Mani said while talking to TOI.

"In one section, they have given 111 years of weather forecast, where they have used mathematical calculations. But the other section has only almanac which was completely unnecessary," he added.

In podigai agriculture program me, most of progressive farmers still refer to Tamil months, tithis, nakshtrams and seasons naturally. This attempt to erase traditional calendar by force and intimidation is condemnable.

Sir,

For generations our agriculturists depend only on almanac for prediction of rainfall.

Scientific forecasting especially by Meteorological Department is for a short term whereas agriculturists need long term forecast for planning their farming activities. Hence the practice cannot be ignored.
