Omar_Sharif__Dr_Zh_3371341c.webpEgyptian-born Omar Sharif, star of Dr Zhivago died aged 83. He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo. He had Alzheimer’s disease. Omar Sharif won international acclaim for his role in David Lean’s 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia and won Golden Globe award. He was a great character actor. Sharif later took the title role in Lean’s Doctor Zhivago (1965), co-starring Julie Christie, for which he won another Golden Globe award.

Omar Sharif earned the reputation as one of the world's best known contract bridge players. In the 1970s and '80s, he co-wrote a syndicated newspaper bridge column for Newspapers. Sharif also wrote several books on bridge and has licensed his name to a bridge computer game, "Omar Sharif Bridge", which has been marketed since 1992.

Omar sharif playing Dr Zhivago left a huge impression on me in my younger days.In lawrence of arabia ,he had a supporting role though.

these films would be considered all time classics- a poem on celluloid.

Yes. Dr Zhivago is indeed a poem in celluloid. Both the films are considered all time greats in English Cinema. Omar Sharif got Golden globe award for his acting in both the films. But my favourite is Dr Zhivago. I wish to add a few words on this movie. This film has been faithfully adopted to the novel by the same name by Boris Pasternak the Russian author and Nobel prize winner. Dr Zhivago won five Oscars. One for best original Music. The famous composition "Lara's theme" played in various moods from the title song to the end is a joy for music lovers. Incidentally his son Tarek acted as the young Yuri (Zhivago) in the same film. Omar Sharif will be remembered for his "suave and restrined acting" as a helpless Doctor during the days of Russian Revolution.
