Egyptian-born Omar Sharif, star of Dr Zhivago died aged 83. He suffered a heart attack this afternoon in a hospital in Cairo. He had Alzheimer’s disease. Omar Sharif won international acclaim for his role in David Lean’s 1962 epic Lawrence of Arabia and won Golden Globe award. He was a great character actor. Sharif later took the title role in Lean’s Doctor Zhivago (1965), co-starring Julie Christie, for which he won another Golden Globe award.
Omar Sharif earned the reputation as one of the world's best known contract bridge players. In the 1970s and '80s, he co-wrote a syndicated newspaper bridge column for Newspapers. Sharif also wrote several books on bridge and has licensed his name to a bridge computer game, "Omar Sharif Bridge", which has been marketed since 1992.
