After Lawyers and Doctors, Teachers Start Wearing Coats to Shield From Lustful Stares
06th October 2015
MADURAI: After doctors and lawyers, it now seems to be the turn of teachers. In perhaps an unusual move, women teachers in a government high school at Vannivelampatti in Peraiyur taluk here from Monday started wearing overcoats while teaching. The intention was to protect them from lewd gazes and comments from boy students during school hours, said the teachers.
A function, which was organised to distribute the overcoats in the school, saw the participation of the district Chief Educational Officer among others. Usilampatti educational district officer Renuka Devi handed the overcoats to eight women teachers at the event held at the co-ed school which has 179 students.
Headmaster S Baskaran said, “We came up with the idea of providing overcoats to the women teachers. When we informed about it to the District Education Department, the authorities, including CEO J Angelo Irudhayasamy, readily agreed to it,” he added.
“We hope that similar to those working in medical and judiciary departments, women teachers would also have more protection with these coats, which could help avoid comments directed at them,” said Baskaran.
