One of India's best-loved patriotic songs, 'Ai mere vatan ke logon', completes 50 years on January 27. Lata Mangeshkar had sung Kavi Pradeep's immortal classic this day in 1963 before Pandit Nehru, moving him to tears.

Indeed, the vivid imagery of the jawan resting his head on his bayonet as death claims him, the final refrain of "Jai Hind! Jai Hind ki sena!", were all so evocative that Nehru asked to meet the songwriter when he visited Mumbai later. Kavi Pradeep's family shared exclusive photos of that audience with TOI.

His daughter Mitul said, "My father wrote the song in 1962 after the Indo-China war. The Indian film industry had decided to do a fundraiser for the army in Delhi, and filmmaker Mehboob Khan approached my father to write a song. Lata Mangeshkar sang it at the National Stadium in New Delhi on January 27, 1963, in the presence of the president and prime minister."

Nehru asked to meet the writer but Kavi Pradeep had not been invited by the organizers. "Two months later on March 21, the prime minister visited Mumbai and repeated his request. My father met him at Raj Bhavan and Nehru requested him to sing at a function at Robert Money School that evening. Kavi Pradeep did so and presented the handwritten lyrics to him," says Mitul.

Actor-filmmaker Manoj Kumar had visited the poet at the time to express his appreciation. "Mahakavi Pradeep has lamented the loss of our brave martyrs in this song. But he has also dealt a slap in the face of our citizens. He exhorts them to fill their eyes with tears because patriotism as a virtue does not come naturally to us. Did any family skip a meal in the honour of jawans during the Kargil conflict or when they were mutilated? Do mothers pray for their welfare? We take it for granted that they will protect us," he says.

C Ramchandra wrote the music for this non-film composition and Kumar points out that among all its creators, it was he who did not get due credit.

The Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon song was first time performed live by Lata Mangeshkar in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru at the Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi on Republic Day (26 January) 1963, just two months after the end of the war. A copy of the soundtrack spool was also later gifted to Nehru on the occasion. According to legend, Nehru was moved to tears by the song.

hi prasad sir,
i salute u....im an indian army veteran....part of kargil conflict......a small soldier in kargil....

Dear Prasad,

Apt to remember that lyric and song this Republic Day. It is one song that brings tears to my eyes too whenever I hear it. Thank you.

The video contains footage from the Wagah border daily change of guard ceremony. I am one who believes it is an unnecessary ceremony we go through. All the furious foot-stomping, fiery stares etc are an overkill. If we want to copy something for the tourists like what we see in London we can do it in NDelhi. I am of the view that Pak is not equal to us and we unnecessarily give it a lot that is not due in the first place.

Yes sir.
I agree with you. I have been to the show at Wagah border. It is fun, but you are right. We should not elevate a pest to the level of India.
