Air India sacks 10 flight attendants for reporting late

NEW DELHI: In the first action of its kind, Air India sacked about 10 air hostesses last week for reporting late for work, delaying flights. AI decided to crack the whip after witnessing an unusual rise in instances of cabin crew sauntering in when they want, keeping passengers waiting for hours. More crew members could lose their jobs in the coming days, warned a senior official.

"The first batch of four air hostesses was sacked after a Delhi-Chicago non-stop flight was delayed because of late arrival of stewardesses last week. The services of five or six more were terminated on Sunday evening. More action will follow," said a senior official.

The problem of crew delaying flights has become endemic since early this year. On February 13, four air hostesses did not reach Delhi's terminal 3 for operating a flight to Australia. While one of them reached the airport almost two hours after the scheduled departure time, another said she could fly only someplace nearby like Dubai. Two others refused to fly. The airline suspended the airhostess who 'opted' for Dubai while her scheduled flight to Australia was waiting.

On February 20, AI issued a general notice warning crew that if they do not reach airports in time to operate flights on time, the airline will take penal action, including terminating their services. "Many of the AI employees flaunt their political connections and rarely obey orders to work properly. This time also, they ignored the notice," said a source.

AI has a cabin crew of 3,600, mostly air hostesses, of which 2,200 are for operating wide-body aircraft for long-haul flights. The rest fly narrow-body planes to domestic and neighbouring international destinations. On time performance (OTP) has never been a strong point with AI and its domestic punctuality is almost always at the bottom of the list released by the DGCA.

"Our OTP has to improve at any cost. We are on the verge of joining the Star Alliance that has globally acclaimed airlines like Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines. Passengers will expect a similar experience from us once we get transfers from Star airlines," said a source.

What a joke. They suddenly decided that customer matters. They should should have fired entire staff and sold the planes to some other airlines. It would save Indian taxpayers for bailing them them out.

airindia has 29percent of indian air traffic. other airlines follow them to set their fares couple of hundred below.they are trying to turn the airlines around. air india employees are not well pad except pilots. they are like other govt employees. as good or as bad. to target them specially the lowly paid hostesses is poor management. if air india goes away ,indian public will be held to ransom by private players setting exorbitant fares and overbooking and off loading the excess like bus paessengers. air india has a laid back style of working which I like. I always take it.

Sorry Krishji,
I have had very bad experience with AI in international travel. Even if they give a free ticket I would not fly with them. Within India too I avoid AI and fly Spice or Indigo. I suppose I expect customer service, not the postal service treatment.

air india is no no for international. only domestic. their dreamliners are a horror. it is bad product . lot of snags and not stabilised yet.in dmestic the load factor is lower than others and their timings suit senior citizen one can take 10-11 am flights for going and after noon for return and avoid local traffic for going home.

I like some of their flights which are a pittance..They offer Goa-Delhi for Rs 3500 with a 3 hour stop over at Mumbai...On a comparative basis, others would be 50% higher

hi
govt organisations has its ups/downs...politically motivated/caste basis appointments....reservations for VIPs....free ticket for

employees/ministers/MPs....there are various factors afftect the efficiency of the organisation....like USA ..all airlines are

private and more competetive...i heard some radio show abt ' SPIRIT AIRLINES' .. a low cost airline....which charges

for water /even for toilet usages.....but im not sure much abt it.....low cost gives low cost services....no doubt abt it...

india's national carrier can not expect services like BRITISH AIRWAYS.....our attitudes like this...we can't give good service...

but WE COLLECT SERVICE CHARGES...IN ALL ASPECTS IN INDIA....

I never fly by Air India either from here US to India or within India on domestic Flights; fear of missing the connection flight, delayed departure are the main reasons for us to avoid Air India.

Most of the time we fly by British Airways/ Lufthansa or Via Gulf by Etihad Airways.

Air journey in economy class is like 3rd class train journey in unreserved compartment. I still can not see me flying 1st class (I am too cheap). So accept the least suffering possible. I used to fly American because of their direct flight. This time flew by Emirates, was not bad except for the layovers. Air India is not in my Radar.

The foolish pride keeps a national carrier flying. Ai should have been left with TATA, and even now they should privatize it. Cut this taxpayer subsidy for poor service. Let us see if it can survive for sometimes on its own. No one should be rewarded for inefficiency.

American Seats in economy Class is less comfortable and Asian Veg is not good; There is no TV/ Video screen for each seat in Long Haul flights like Chicago/ London

Moreover they also change the departure timings at short notice.

Lufthansa/ BA are much better regarding Food, Seat, and other amenities .

3 hours late...i missed the connecting flight in USA........like prasad ji said....EVEN IF I GET FREE TICKET TO INDIA....I NEVER

TRAVELLED BY AIR INDIA....i always prefered traveller of BRITISH AIRWAYS......before time in chennai/london too,,,within

india i prefer indigo/ jet airways.....

i heard abt joining of air india into star alliance....air india unfit for international travel....sorry to say.....

Even politicians and bureaucrats prefer other airlines, even though they are instructed to use the national carrier.

Bloomsbury withdrew a book on the fall of air india, and there was no murmur on freedom of speech.

Bloomsbury withdraws 'The Descent of Air India', with an apology to Praful Patel!
Bloomsbury withdraws all copies of Jitender Bhargava's book that chronicles the fall of Air India and tenders an apology to former aviation minister Praful Patel, even as the author has refused to back down and avers that whatever he wrote was factual.

"This decision of Bloomsbury was unilateral, and without discussing with me, as an author. Their stand thus naturally came to me as a surprise. And it may surprise you too when you see the apology of Bloomsbury published in the newspapers," said Jitender Bhargava in an email.
Speaking about the publisher’s decision to withdraw the book, Mr Bhargava said, "As everything stated in the book is true, based on documents, I will have the book, 'The Descent of Air India' reprinted either on my own or through a new publisher. Simultaneous action is being initiated to bring out ' The Descent of Air India', as an e-book. I am told this can take up to four-five weeks. I will be back soon because neither can I be bulldozed into submission nor can facts be allowed to be suppressed."
Earlier, in November, Moneylife Foundation organised an event in Mumbai where Dr Subramanian Swamy, former minister of commerce and law launched the book. On the decline of Air India, Dr Swamy highlighted a few reasons: harmful bilateral agreements, all profitable routes were shut down and made available to other airlines. He also mentioned that the airline bought aeroplanes that were probably overpriced and recently they sold these brand new planes as junk to Etihad, at one-third of the buying price.
