Air India's flight attendants 'too fat to fly'

The national carrier of India, Air India, is grounding around 130 flight attendants after measuring their BMI body fat levels!!!

Air India flight attendants, not those pictured above in 2012, must have a "normal" BMI

Air India last year warned 600 of its 3,500 cabin crew to lose weight within six months or risk being taken off flights and given a job on the ground. The airline now plans to remove about 130 from cabin crew duty because their body mass index (BMI) levels remain above the prescribed limit.

A BMI is a measure of body fat based on a person’s height and weight.

The airline said that the “normal” BMI for an air hostess is between 18 and 22, “overweight” between 22 and 27, and “obese” for a value above 27.

For male attendants the brackets were 18 to 25, 25 to 30, and above. The NHS says a “healthy” BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9.

I prefer air india hostesses for their homely looks.

They preserve the bharatiya sanskriti.

many senior ones due to their long service are far more professional than other airlines.

We should take it up with our culture hawks and see that they are not phased out of flying duties.

I like the hospitality of Air India staff especially international...They are far better than the so called private airlines

Air hostesses are having a rough time these days.

their numbers/flight are reduced in many low cost airlines.

they are forced to do more than simply catering to passengers .

With unbundling of food items , they are made responsible for account keeping

they are made to sell various things on the plane.

they have minimum turn around time between flights.

it is no longer a pleasant occupation for them.

Many jobs/ Qualifications that were the pride of the Elites have now turned to normal routine jobs and Airhostess / Flight Attendants is one such job . In the 70s and early 80s a BE Grad was rare and was but now even my Plumber''s son is doing his BE .

It is the right choice for a plumbers son.

In addition to plumbing ,if he knows mechanical engg, he can be very successful.

I would prefer him to a sastrigals son with a mechanical engg degree.lol

A lil bit chubby is fine ;-p

I think, in times of emergency or any other the crew has to be physically fit to assist the others. If they are overweight or obese, they might be the ones needing assistance. It is only right that they are being asked to regulate their weight.

Krishji,

The politically correct (and gender neutral) term these days is "flight attendant" aka "viman sevak". :)

The term "hostess" is supposed to have certain .... connotations.
