The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed the Centre and state governments to provide basic infrastructure, including drinking water and toilets, in all schools within six months.

A bench headed by justice K S Radhakrishnan fixed the time limit and asked the governments to take steps to provide the basic facilities in schools across the country.

The bench said that all its previous directions pertaining to providing infrastructure should be implemented within the time frame fixed by it.

On October 18 last year, the apex court had directed all states and union territories to build toilets, particularly for girls, in all government schools.

The court passed the order on a PIL seeking its direction to Centre and state governments to provide basic facilities of drinking water and toilets in schools.

The apex court had earlier stated that it was imperative that all schools provide toilet facilities, as empirical researches indicated that wherever toilet facilities are not provided in schools, parents do not send their children (particularly girls) to schools.

The court had also observed that not providing the infrastructure was a violation of the right to free and compulsory education of children guaranteed under Article 21-A of the Constitution.

On October 18 last year, the apex court had directed all states and union territories to build toilets, particularly for girls, in all government schools.

Whether ATR (Action Taken Report) has been got is not known. In many cases, with all good intentions, so many laws/regulations are made but at implementation level, they come to a naught (zero).

Let us wait and see whether the present order of Supreme court would be implemented in toto which is a basic necessity. It is imperative for the schools to provide such essential facility.

Exactly!!!!!

If poor students can realize this Indian Political Shenanigan, being exposed through today's powerful media , studying and suffering in such Government Schools, what moral goodness can be expected of them when they grow?

Supreme Court of India is existing from ages and the fact is that, India is not a newly identified and established country that is been emerged from Amazon Forest with wild tribal inhabitants.

It's all the political and wide spread administration corruption from every nook and corner that is still keeping India under the stage of a "Developing Nation"

It seems any no. of Supreme Court orders to develop infrastructure and basic needs are all backed up by political strategies, that enables the strategy making and strategy implementing politicians and officials to be successful in their looting.

May this pathetic and terrible plight of India comes to an end for better by the efforts of Indians themselves and not with any External Forces in the pretext of revamping the country for the benefits of its citizens to achieve certain ulterior motives.

India – Schools to get more toilets | Sanitation Updates

It does not have to be only government's job, if there was a civic cooperation.

Nov. 30, 2010 – To address the lack of sanitation facilities in girls’ schools, FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) has tied up with Sulabh International to provide toilets in schools. Launching the programme on Monday, FLO said it took up the initiative after surveys and government reports established the link between girls dropping out of schools due to lack of proper sanitation facilities in government as well as private schools.

As part of the project, two schools in Bhiwandi and one in Dahanu will be provided with the toilet facilities. “We are inviting applications from schools and organisations working in the sanitation sector for setting up toilets for girls in schools,” said Bela Rajan, chairperson, FLO.

FLO will fund the project, while Sulabh International Social Service Organisation will provide the infrastructure and know-how for constructing these toilets.

The Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan provides for construction of separate toilets for girls in schools. In most states including Maharashtra less than 50% schools and in some states less than 25% schools have separate toilets for girls, said Rajan. “Moreover, most of the schools which have toilets on paper, don’t actually have toilets functioning for various reasons,” she added.
