I am not a fan of Amma.
Having said that, this is a great venture. This should have been replicated in TN and rest of the country. My hats off to Amma.

Like music, food also proves to cut across class barriers. The jostling crowds thronging 'Amma's Canteen' for the Re 1 a piece idli include as many office-goers as rickshaw pullers.

The low-cost canteens in Chennai, serving breakfast and lunch at rock-bottom rates, are an instant hit. And the welldressed office-going crowd does not seem to mind sharing space with the slum-dweller for that tasty rice-sambar sold at Rs.5 and curd-rice sold at Rs.3.

"I am a regular at Amma's Canteen in the morning. It is second to none in quality and taste. Moreover, the place as well as preparation is hygienic," says M. Rajeswaran (39) of Santhome, a bank employee.

One of its most popular outlets, close to the famed Santhome Cathedral, is abutted by slums of fisher-folk on the Marina seafront.

"It suits my office timings. The place is small but neat and tidy. The shining utensils and the cleanliness of the staff attract one to be a regular visitor," he says. It is not unusual to see mothers with schoolchildren also joining the crowd and feeding their wards.

"I can finish my breakfast in just Rs.5. In case I skip it, I can have lunch for Rs.8. Indeed a boon for people like us," says construction labourer V. Kumar (26). Like him, most of the rickshawpullers and other daily wage earners get a packet ofpakora or vada to have the rice items.

After the success of Ammas Canteen, now Ammas Water.
In a bid to ensure quality and affordable drinking water to the poor and middle class people, the Jayalalitha government in Tamil Nadu is set to launch nine 'Amma Mineral Water' production units across the state that would offer one litre bottle priced at Rs 10. These units, to be established by the state transport corporations, would make available one litre of mineral water packed in bottles at Rs 10 each, ensuring safe water and reducing to some extent the financial burden of the people, Chief Minister J Jayalalitha said in a statement here.

The government initiative would be a boon to the people, especially the Chennaites who were left in the lurch by the recent strike by packaged drinking water firms after the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board shut down 92 manufacturing units found operating without licence. Jayalalitha, who is fondly called by her party cadre as "Amma", said that in the first phase, a production unit would be established in suburban Gummidipoondi with a capacity of three lakh litre per day and necessary equipment would be procured by the road transport corporation.

The water bottles would be made available in buses plying in long distance routes, at mofossil bus terminus and bus terminals here, Jayalalitha said. She said the transport corporations would sell a litre of bottled water at Rs 10 as against Rs 15 by the Railways and Rs 20 by private players. After the official launch of the first unit on the occasion of AIADMK legend and late Chief Minister C N Annadurai's birth anniversary on September 15, nine more water production units would be established across the state, she said. The strike by over 200 mineral water companies in Chennai left the residents thirsty as most of the households depend on these bubble-top water cans, other than the supply from Chennai Corporation.

How does it all work? Is it subsidized?
If not subsidized and the quality control is as good as claimed, I am for amma for next PM.

This is remarkable social engineering.

In the midst of all the heated discussion on the relevance of the proposed National Food Security bill, the news of 'Amma Unavagams' (or Amma's Canteen) has failed to catch the nation's attention. The canteen was inaugurated by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Feb 19 as part of a pilot scheme to meet the needs of the lower strata of society and migrant workers. Operated by women self-help groups, in neat and hygienic conditions, these canteens became an instant hit.

Charging Rs 1 for a piece of idli, Rs 3 for curd rice, and Rs 5 for sambar rice, these canteen will now serve dinner too. Says a report in The Times of India (May 22, 2013): "Jayalalithaa's promised evening fare of chapathis and dal will be available from 6pm to 9pm. Welcoming this, councilors on Wednesday also demanded additions like beverages and side dishes. The Chennai Corporation will buy modern cooking equipment that can produce 3,000 chapathis in an hour. "A group of six women can make only 50 chapathis an hour. So, we decided to opt for this machine," said mayor Saidai S Duraisamy, during the council meeting. The corporation estimates the demand to be around 2,000 chapathis per canteen, or 4 lakh chapathis a day at all the 200 canteens. Chapathis are to cost Rs 3 each and will be served with dal and korma on alternate days."

Amma canteens

The Taittriya Upanishad says, "Do not send away anyone who comes to your door, without offering him food and hospitality”.
Great service to the people. Without fanfare and passing any legislation, Madam J Jayalalitha has brought cooked food to the poor at affordable price. This itself is Annadhanam without reducing oneself to beggary. By her previous venture of giving free food at Temples, Churches and Mosques she had shown her determination to practice all religions. This should be a guide for all politicians who are interested in serving the poor and hungry.

Bangalore.
