An exploration of delicate shades
Bombay Jayashri, who was awarded the ‘Madurakala Praveena’ on the 10th day of the 63rd anniversary celebrations of Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam, began her concert singing in Arabhi on ‘Sri Saraswathi,’ who is praised by Dikshitar in this kriti as the holder of the secret of all the syllables of hymns. ‘Akhilandeswari’ was invoked through Dwijavnthi by the same composer as one who delights in musical instrument.
A short alapana in Hindolam was followed by ‘Samagana Lolane’ by Sivan. She then sang ‘Raguvara’ in Kamavardhini by Thyagaraja, a song that lent itself to speedy neravals and super fast kalpana swaras. Subbarama Dikshitar’s ‘Shankaracharyam’ provided the singer a base for making a similar swara prasthana in Shankarabharanam. M. Rajeev on the violin captured the singer’s nuances in all their detail and speed and provided wonderful support.
The ragam and tanam in Desh won a good round of applause. The pallavi ‘Varade Sharade’ in her inimitable style was a pleasant experience and an exploration of the delicate shades of the raga. This is what rasikas look forward to in Jayashri’s concerts. N. Manoj Siva on the mridangam and Anirudhu Athreya on the kanjira beat a variety of patterns during the thani.
A few songs on Krishna and a vibrant thillana made for a fitting finish to the concert.
