Things are not looking good for Apple, as far as revenues are concerned. Its star product, the iPhone is slowing down, and its other divisions aren’t enough to make up for the reducing revenue. Sure, it is among the most valuable companies in the world, and has hundreds of billions of dollars in its war chest, but future growth for the company is still up in the air.
It needs to find a new flagship product, and it needs to do it fast. And its flagship product is apparently going to be a Virtual Reality headset, according to a report by the Financial Times.
Yes, Apple has apparently assembled a huge team to work on a VR Headset. Apple is putting hundreds of employees in the team, with some coming from companies like Microsoft and Lytro, both experienced with such technologies. It is also leveraging technology from recent acquisitions like Metaio, Faceshift, Emotient and Flyby Media, all of which have been working on either augmented reality or virtual reality technology.
Apple already has a few hardware prototypes developed, and if it finds that spark in Virtual Reality, we may see an announcement from Apple in a year or two.
Till then, we are left to speculate about the exact nature of the VR Headset that Apple is working on, and also what differentiates it from competitors like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. What do you think?
