ASHTA VASUS - The Elemental Gods
ASHTA-VASUS (Vedic Gods).....
They are a class of Vedic deities; eight in number called Ashta Vasus; the elemental gods who are associated with Indra, the Lord of Heaven. They represent the basic aspects of nature; cosmic natural phenomenon viz; the earth, fire, water, wind, sky, sun; moon and stars.
Their nomenclatures differ in different sacred texts and puranas and there is no unanimity in the list. May be they are the same set known by various names. Names of Ashta Vasus as per couple of versions are as follows;
Anala is one of the names of Ashta Vasus. Anala is another name of Fire god Agni which is insatiable. Lord Vishnu is also known as Anala (sloka # 32; 76 of Vishnu Sahasranama stothram) the one whose strength and energies are unlimited; have no bounds and is insatiable.
Among Ashta Vasus, Agni (Anala) is the foremost. Anila is another name of Praana the Air God Vaayu. Lord Vishnu is known as Anilah (sloka # 25 of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama stothram). He is the vital life force and the source of life for everyone; without Him even the air cannot live.
Similarly, Lord Vishnu is Somah (sloka # 54 of Vishnu Sahasranama Stothram) the divine nectar and the nourisher and protector of vegetation. Vasu means dweller or dwelling. In sloka # 29; 74 of Sri Vishnu Sahasranama stothram we find a reference to the word Vasu where Lord Vishnu is eulogized as Vasuh. He is the dweller everywhere and everything dwells in Him. Lord Vishnu is popularly known as Vasudeva the Lord of Vasus.
Vasu + Deva; Deva means the lord and Vasudeva (Vishnu) is the lord of Vasus. He is the one who Himself is Vasu. In Bhagawadgeeta 10th canto (Vibhoothi Yoga) Lord Sri Krishna says that, He is Agni among Vasus; “Vasuunaam Paavakaschaasmi” Paavaka is another name of Agni.
During 28[SUP]th[/SUP] Dwapara Yuga, Ashta Vasus took birth on earth as sons of the River Goddess Ganga and Kuru King Shantanu due to a curse from Sage Vasishta.Seven of them got liberated from this mortal world soon after their birth whereas the eighth one by name Dyau (Prabhasa) had to endure a longer life who was none other than the great warrior and Mahabharatha fame Bheeshma (Devavratha). Lord Sri Krishna’s foster father Nanda was an incarnation of one of the Ashta Vasus by name Drona.
Along with Ekaadasa (11) Rudras + Dwaadasa (12) Aadityaas + Prajapathi + Vashatkaara; Ashta Vasus (8) form a significant group of # 33 principal Gods. Ashta Vasus are Demi-Gods who dwell in the terrestrial region.
