Nice to see this difference .I hope Modiji becomes successful in cleaning the entire Ganga as well as Varanasi during his 5 year tenure and that should act as a model for keeping the other rivers and other religious places clean and neat .

Chances of success are high because plans are broad based and comprehensive. Pollution monitoring sensors, closing of polluting industries (mostly leather) unless effluent treatment is done, sewage treatment plants in every city, town and village along the banks, water flow management, and many more such steps.

All this will be done without banning two important rituals - burning and immersion of ashes, which are cherished desires of most hindus.

I do not know how far Modi can deliver on his promise in 5 years but I want him to be successful in the Clean Ganga and Clean India campaign and there must be lot of active public participation for the above 2 schemes to be successful .

Frankly speaking why should it be Modi alone who should succeed in cleaning up Ganga/clan India?

It seems that people just want someone else to do "propel" then into any action and yet remain attached to "inaction".

Cleanliness is something that should be an individual responsibility..till this is understood no clean up of any kind is possible.

Few weeks ago I noticed that the drains around my housing area has lots of leaves inside and it had blocked the drain with clear water and that is surely a breeding ground for dengue mosquitoes and sure enough there were some larvae.

So right away I called up the Dengue HotLine of the local council and they came to clean up the drain.

They do clean the drain every 2 weeks but this needed extra cleaning.

Then I saw a neigbour having a tyre in her lawn that was filled with water..that again a breeding ground for larvae.

But how to tell a neighbour to remove the tyre without her getting offended.

My husband wanted the direct approach of telling her to remove it but I told my husband I will spin a situation so that she does not get angry.

So I waited for her to be outside in her lawn and I was acting as if I am cleaning my lawn etc..and then I told her that the health department informed me that they are coming for spot checks to check each home may be in the next 2 weeks..I told her that I am cleaning my lawn so that no dengue larvae is there.

Then she said "OMG I need to clean my lawn too" and she removed the tyre right away.

The point here is my planned worked but the fact remained that she knew that a tyre filled with water is a breeding ground for larvae but only the fear of authorities made her clean it.

So this is what I totally dislike that people need to fear authorities to get into action..if no authority ..no action.

Modi once said in an interview that money is not a problem for any project; successful implementation is possible only with the involvement of all stake holders, including the public and users. He has so far succeeded in getting people involved in his mission projects - girl education, swachcha bharat.

wonderful to see the sight of Assi Ghat. I had gone there and wish I go there now. I believe Modi will do what he wanted. as Renuka Ji mentioned that if y want someone shud something, if y start doing yourself others will follow automatically. - srinivasan

Thanks for posting both the pictures. I can foresee clean Ganga and clean India in another two to three years. Cleaning is not the only solution. Planned propaganda should be made by the Government to educate people in this regard.

Varanasi happens to be PM's constituency. Something has to be done to keep the promise made at the time of Lok Sabha election. Maintaining consistency is the real problem.

Let us wait and see how long will it go.

This is done by volunteers and nothing to do official machinery. There a whatsapp groups to coordinate cleaning and monitoring. Local boys are pitching in to see that morning callers discouraged.

Try to be a bit optimistic and strongly wish for good things to happen.

Gauri Kund at Prabhu ghat

Many in varansi are seeing this for the first time. Long live the volunteers. Protecting water bodies, building tanks and restoring and maintenance of sacred tanks accrues lot of punya and burns the sins.

A side interest- would release of film Mohalla Assi on varanasi assi ghat get a release.

It has got into a controversy and may end up a mutilated film.

No one likes to face realities of Assi mohalla.

What a change. Great initiative and leadership have done the trick. Let the good work continue to give positive results.

Hats off to Mr. Modi ! He initiated the process. .Every day the Ganga is polluted and every day cleaning work has to be performed. Therefore, " clean Ganga" is a continuous process unto the last. The responsibility lies in the hands of the visitors in making their own contribution for up keeping the environment of the Ganga, clean.

Krishji,

It is a rabid anti Hindu film! Why are you bent on seeing that! It is banned already!

It is a film made by people who know the ground realities of mohalla assi.

it has already been screened in film festivals abroad.

the assi ghats may get cleaned up due to efforts of govt and local agencies,

but mindset of people there are unlikely to change in a hurry.

a few might get a few scenes of a film clipped by going to courts. that does not alter the ground realities.

I have gone to varanasi more than once.

so I have experienced to some extent the life there.
