Auto meter

Not much of a change in our locality(West Mambalam). Autowallahs don't want to go by the meter; if we insisit on that, they simply drive away. Alternatively, they have already started the excuse that the meter is not working/repair etc. Again, if we have to go short distance, they simply will not put on the meter saying that it is local trip and not worth using the meter. Some habits die hard.

I would not outright reject. There is surely a welcome change in attitude of commuters and so the Autowalahs also...
If one insists the meter is on. Would you believe I was demanded a charge of Rs 70 for small distance and when insisted for meter there was another auto willing to bargain for Rs 40 and finally on putting the meter ended the journey paying just the minimum of Rs 25.
Just that everyone should demand and the if that happens even the govt will relent to implement strictly the same.

The state transport authority (STA) has said that 49%, or 35,107, of the 71,470 autorickshaw drivers in Chennai have recalibrated their auto meters in accordance with the new fares.

November 15 is the deadline to recalibrate the auto meters.

According to an STA statement published on Thursday, 63,311 autos (88%) have the new fare cards.

Close to 2,700 autos have been detained and the department has handled 520 complaints so far. Besides the STA, the traffic police also have renewed their drive against the erring auto drivers.

Commuters who find auto drivers not plying by the new fares can send an SMS to 9003130103 or call 044-23452330, 044-24749002 and 044-26744445. In an emergency, one can call 103.

I was in T. Nagar, not much has changed. Autowallas do not use meters, and nothing happens even if you sms 9003130103.

The autowallahs in their stands demand as usual! But some of those who are running past us, collect meter charge only.

May be they are be the persons driving to the area to which we wish to go! We got an auto at Egmore station recently

and the meter charge to West K K nagar was Rs. 134/ only. We gave +6 and he was :becky:
Previously we used to shell out at least 225 bucks for the same distance.

Madam Raji Ram's kind of experience is generally few and far between. Even today, I had to face the unpleasant demands from Auto drivers to travel from Saidapet end of W.Mambalam to the Kodambakkam end of W.Mambalam. (i) They wont come; (ii) No meter Sir, repair (iii) Local trip sir, please pay Rs.60. (iv) Yar Sir meter poduvanga; neenga kudukkarathai kudunga. When I told him I will pay by meter, he simply drove away. Owing to a sprain my wife has to go and return from office in Auto. They never charged by the meter. This is the reality. Some people and habits will never change.

As long as Police and Politicians to which ever party they belong , take a concerted effort to regularize Auto Drivers, nothing will be successful!!

Most Auto's are probably owned by Police personnel and Politicians , and unless this is rooted out, Autos running by Meter is impossible in Chennai.

What Sarathy Sir writes might be correct because after my trip from Egmore, I have been using cabs for travel! :car:

It is disgusting to argue with the autowallahs who are mostly rude to people.

hi
now a days a lot of cab services in chennai...i heard that rates are ok and behaving nicely with customers...

Yes TBS Sir. The non A / C rates are 400 for 3 hours - 30 kms; 500 for 4 hours - 40 kms; 600 for 5 hours - 50 kms.

Extra kms are charged @ Rs. 5. Usually we club two or three visits in the same direction and book our 'AsthAna' cab.
