The government on Wednesday imposed a ban on gutkha, pan masala and other such chewable products in the State as they are found to contain harmful ingredients of tobacco and nicotine which will cause cancer and other diseases.

By an order issued on Wednesday through Health, Medical & Family Welfare Department, the government banned with immediate effect, manufacture, storage, sale, transportation and display of these products.

The step has been taken under various sections of the Food Safety & Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations of 2011 and the Food Safety and Standards Act of 2006, conceding a long-standing demand of anti-tobacco organisations and activists.
The ban brings to halt, the indiscriminate sales of gutkha, pan masala and other such chewable products at thousands of roadside bunks and other retails outlets in the State. These are invariably used by drivers, particularly those on long-distance journey, besides others. They are preferred by them to get the necessary ‘kick” and keep them awake.
The government, at the same time, asked the Commissioner, Food Safety, and the Departments of Police, Health, Vigilance & Enforcement, Commercial Taxes, Transport, Labour, Municipal Administration and Panchayat Raj to take immediate steps to ensure enforcement of the ban from day one.

BAN WELCOMED

Hailing the ban , Director, Apollo Cancer Hospital, Dr. P. Vijayanand Reddy said it would save millions of lives.
In a statement here, he said there were over 3,095 chemical components in chewing tobacco products and 28 among them proved to be carcinogens. He said that over 90 per cent of oral cancer was directly associated with tobacco use and India has the highest prevalence of oral cancer globally -- with 75,000 to 80,000 new cases being reported every year.
He thanked Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy for taking bold step.

How about tobacco inhaling (SMOKING and SNUFF)?

How about the carcino-genic movies ;)

The first Line is definitely legitimate. Smoking and snuff are nasty habits and should be banned. It might be difficult to ban smoking. It is revenue generator for the government. The health cost of tobacco related problems justify the ban.

Second line takes away the seriousness of the topic.

I welcome this ban! The major problem with these 'chewers' is that they spit anywhere they like! In Thirupathi temple premises,

I have seen these red coloured designs on the walls, where the bhakthAs move in queues. In Sing. Chennai, the pictures of Gods

and Goddesses are painted on the walls of the staircase room, in a few complexes, to escape these kind of splashes! :dizzy:

P.S: In a movie, one guy says to the other, 'I don't mind you smoking as long as you only inhale the smoke and don't exhale it!

In Sing. Chennai, it is a good idea NOT to walk near the buses in which passengers are seated!

You will never know when a red splash will attack you from above!!

Such Prohibitions do not amount to much. We had banned Dowry long time back. Remember. We have banned smoking also. We have banned spitting also.

We have a limited number of police personnel. Are they supposed to prevent crime or impose such prohibitions?

The only result would be to drive these underground and make them more expensive. And also increase the income of sundry police men.

In India we are in the habit of enacting laws which are more Symbolic and are difficult to enforce.

Prohibition of Alcohol did not stop people from drinking. It only led to the emergence of illicit liquor and the liquor mafia. In U.S as well as India. Prohibition pf Pan Masala would meet the same fate.

This Ban in AP -is very good and welcome even though they are the highest in harvesting the plant ,plant product. We (IDA -Indian Dental Association) are struggling very bad and requesting our central goverment to ban it completely.Anti-tobacco day being done for years ,we invite health ministers explain the ill effects ,snaps of the side effects etc.But for sure once this habit is stopped, attempted the tissues will regain its original form ,but depends on the intensity of exposure of habit. In general pan usage will lead-to a dreadful condition --OSMF-Oral sub muscous fibrosis .ie-the very soft cheek muscles becomes very hard and fibrous .They cannot open the mouth fully, tongue movements ,chewing will be restricted.burning sensation always so eating will be a big problem ,thus depleting over all health.I personally welcome this ban to our country completely.:peace:

But what about Paanwalas?

What about their business?

Now when I read this article I am thinking of my college days Paanwala..he used to wear a transparent bright yellow kurta top with an equally psychedelic colored Lungi and used to tie some handkerchief like scarf around his neck and spit Paan non stop.

He also sold Paan 420 which is supposed to contain some cannabinoid!

He was from Bihar came all the way from Bihar to earn a living in Karnataka..wonder why he could not sell Paan in Bihar or what?

Anyway..this topic brought back my college days memories.

To me frankly speaking banning any substance actually does not make much difference..somehow people will find someway to get it.

After all out here one gets the death sentence for drug trafficking but yet people traffic drugs.

It is good that the AP Government has imposed a ban on gutkha, pan masala and other such chewable products in the State. I agree just banning will not stop the use of these harmful drugs, but it will instill fear and certainly curtail using them. Further, the central Government should ban the manufacturing of these Pan Masala and Gudka, as these are harmful to health.
In Bangalore the migrant labour from north has spread the use of Gudka and Pan masala every where and now I find this practice is spreading in alarming proportions among the student populations also.

The unwritten death sentence is factually for the
users of the drug and not for those who traffic in drugs!!! :fear:

OK Manufacture abundantly without leading to any scarcity and widely sell Gutkhas, Pan Masalas/Jartha etc..

Let people who are used to continue to chew tobacco. At the end of the day for sure Dr's/Hospitals would have great business!!!

Politicians for sure would benefit a lot too along with Manufacturers and Hospitals.

As far as Humans are concerned they have their fundamental rights of living the way they want with all these stuffs. No one has any right to restrict them in the name of Law and Relationship.

All are happy, being mentally prepared for the illness and death and by gaining money..

Sounds really great!!! LOL!!

Sir,

If Health costs of tobacco justify the ban on tobacco, why is it not applicable to alcohol..? Why one yardstick for tobacco and another for alcohol..?

"A study from the state of Karnataka in South India estimated that monetizable direct and indirect costs attributable to people with alcohol dependence alone, was more than 3 times the profits from alcohol taxation and several times more than the annual health budget of that state."

India: Alcohol and public health

"There has been a significant lowering of age at initiation of drinking. Data from Karnataka showed a drop from a mean of 28 years to 20 years, between the birth cohorts of 1920-30 and 1980-1990."

And now the drinking age has fallen to teens. People just entering teens have started drinking.

"The local alcohol industry, quick to seize upon this emerging market, has introduced new products such as flavoured and mild alcoholic products, aimed to recruit nondrinkers, targeted primarily at women and young men.The industry circumvents bans on advertising by surrogate advertising, and the subject of alcohol advertising (surrogate and point-of-purchase) has changed from voluptuous pinups (targeting the traditional market of middle aged male consumers), to lifestyle advertisements promoting the spirit of good times, clearly aimed at women and youth. Multinational alcohol beverage companies redeploying from shrinking markets in the developed world have identified India, with its growing consumer base, vast unexploited markets and commitments to the World Trade Organisation to reduce quantitative restrictions on alcohol imports as one of the most attractive markets for investment."

Alcohol misuse in India is a prominent node in an inter-related matrix of high risk behaviours which has begun to impose an ever growing burden on the social and economic health of the nation. These include violence and injuries, highrisk sexual behaviours and HIV infection, industrial losses, retarded economic development of individuals and families which ultimately impact on national growth."

But I am not in favor of a ban on alcohol. Alcohol is a social issue. The answer has to be found socially. The intellectuals, opinion-makers of the society have to realize it (which were supposed to be the Brahmana castes those days) have to take it up as a social issue and make people realize the problems.

Historically, India never had a ban on alcohol. There was a social stigma created around it and it helped it to keep the issue at bay, while some sections indulged in it.

The same is applicable for tobacco products also.

I was talking about prohibition in U.S. Prohibition was implemented in the U.S in 1920 long before any one in India even thought about it. It not only failed miserably but also led to the emergence of organized crime syndicates, notably the MAFIA.

Prohibition in the United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We should have learnt from that history.

But the Indians have a notable anathema to history in any form. Leaving alone learning from History, Indians especially the Hindus do not want any history. No history of temples , no history of religion or of India.
