Bangalore: Celeb fertility doc K.T.Gurumurthy turns out to be a quack
Many eyebrows were raised after the arrest of Bangalore-based fertility specialist K.T. Gurumurthy. The disbelief is understood since Gurumurthy, who had successfully handled complicated pregnancy cases of top celebrities from South India, landed behind the bars last week when his medical degrees were found out to be fake.
National award-winning actress Tara Anuradha, Bhavya and a host of other actresses were among his marquee clientele. Gurumurthy never missed an opportunity to flaunt his top connections. Last year, when Tara attained motherhood under his medical supervision, billboards featuring the doctor and his highprofile client dotted the skyline of Bangalore.
Gurumurthy was a regular speaker on leading local Kannada TV channels, making him one of the most sought after fertility experts of the city. But the police probe revealed that Gurumurthy had merely obtained a B. Sc degree from the Lucknow University and a lab technician course.
According to the police, Gurumurthy obtained an 'honorary doctorate' from a Sri Lankan university in an effort to legitimise his medical trade. Many of the other certificates in his possession declaring him to be a fertility specialist and embryologist are not genuine, they said. The probe is yet to conclude.
The scam was busted after 30 patients lodged police complaints alleging that Gurumurthy had cheated them by promising fertility treatment. Gurumurthy reportedly charged fees in the range of Rs.3 lakh to Rs.12 lakh to offer various medical services like Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF); Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI), egg donation and surrogacy among others.
"The victims claimed that the fertility treatment was not effective. We are also probing whether his firm has the necessary permission to manage surrogacy centres," DCP (Bangalore west) Labhu Ram said. In 2011, there were similar charges against Gurumurthy. According to the police, Gurumurthy was hobnobbing with politicians in order to expand his business.
