A Sikh Man's turban is sacred to him. They wear it with pride. But 22-year-old Harman Singh did not think twice before taking his turban off

Melbourne: A 22-year-old Sikh man removed his turban to help a profusely bleeding child following a road accident in New Zealand, garnering praise for his humanitarian effort, a media report said today.

Harman Singh was at his home in Auckland when a five-year-old boy, who was walking to school with his elder sister, was hit by a car nearby. Mr Singh rushed to the spot after hearing the screeching of car wheels and the commotion.

He said he did not think twice about removing his turban to help the child, who was bleeding from the head.

"I wasn't thinking about the turban. I was thinking about the accident and I just thought that he needs something on his head because he's bleeding. That's my job to help," Mr Singh was quoted as saying by New Zealand Herald.

Though removing turban is rare, Mr Singh said the religious protocols do not restrict action in emergency situations, the report said.

The injured boy was rushed to a nearby hospital where his injuries were initially thought to be life-threatening but later, his condition was stated to be stable.

An eyewitness to the whole episode, Gagan Dhillon clicked a picture of Mr Singh with the child and posted it on social networking site Facebook with a caption "So proud of this young Sikh man who helped at a crash this morning where a child was hit by a car."

Scores of people shared the image within minutes while showering praise on him.

Dhillon, a Sikh himself, said taking off a turban to help a stranger on street was a rare sight. There was enough help as there was, but being a Sikh myself, I know what type of respect the turban has. People just don't take it off - people die over it.

Netizens praised Mr Singh for his action, considered a hugely significant act of humanity.

Before P J sir gets upset for deviating from the OP, let us say:
Jai Ho 22-year-old Harman Singh!! :clap2:

Some humans pause and help. Some don't. Many a time hit and run drivers don't stop to help the victims. Yesterday a girl died in western expressway in Mumbai.
Animals too help their young and group members when injured or if in trouble.

I think in Indian cities we hardly pause to help someone in distress...We do not want to be bothered about going to police station or acting as a witness in court! Why get into trouble is uppermost amongst the majority!

You have scared me enough, P J Sir! Ref: post # 7.

Here after :bolt: from all threads you start!!:decision:

That the Sikh young man took his tarban to save the young boy is good.

Just wanted to share a similar story... last Winter, here in MA, a woman went into delivery pain right in the middle of a busy street in Downtown. She delivered the baby, not sure who helped her. However, the newborn was shivering without enough blankets to cover in the shivering winter. A young woman rushed to the help, she took out her winter jacket and put it on the baby for warmth and left without even leaving her name behind... wearing just a thin sleevless shirt! Somehow they tracked her down and she appeared on TV briefly...

?? What is the big act of sacrifice here?

After all a sikh also removes his turban before bathing or sleeping..its really not a big act of sacrifice here.

I have seen people even remove their clothes and stand in their underwear to help others in distress...people who run into a burning house to save others and die in that process...that is sacrifice.

True in private in the end we are all human! the identity goes in thin air You are not bonded to anything But in public glare you should establish your idenrtity with turban skull cap or Y or U on your fore head. When you are removing this identities when there is a camera or audiance fundamentalist calls it a sacrifice! This is human nature
Because in the end, we are all humans.

But still by removing the turban in public he did not sacrifice anything I feel..its not as if he sacrificed his life for the boy.

I would praise him as a person with intelligence who did not attach too much importance to external identity and used his turban to stop the bleeding of the injured child.

So its intelligence here and not sacrifice.

For some it may even look like a photo Op! But it is the greatest sacrifice in the minds of people we are obssesed with these identities! May argue - he coud have used his kerchief or even his Kovanam - but he chose his religious id!

Not stopping after hitting in India is due the reason.. crazy public may join together and beat the person who made the accident. Good action by the singh. Except our Manmohan Singh, all the singhs seem to be doing sensibly other than being in sardar jokes now and then.

Hit and run.... Only in India? No! It happened in the U S of A also.

Our family has personal experience of a hit and run case!

Was it victims Karma that there was turbaned sikh on ths spot ? Only N.Z.? Why not in US?
No! There was no 'ee, kAkkA' on that road!
In fact, Ram was the victim (hit during his morning walk) and he had to walk back home with the injury! :ballchain:
P.S: Friends who have read my travelogue (in Tamil) written in 'PayaNak ka(vi)thaigaL' know the details. :ranger:
