[h=1]Being the default search engine on iOS cost Google $1 billion[/h] January 22, 2016 Kishore Ganesh Leave a comment Edit
Google is a large company that has made inroads into several fields. Starting as a search engine, it now owns the most popular operating system, the most viewed content platform and also has lots of experimental industry-leading products in the works.
But Google doesn’t make a lot of money from them. Sure, YouTube and Android rake in billions of dollars, but it is Google’s search advertising business that brings in the lion’s share of the revenue. So if something were to happen to it, if it were disrupted, Google would be in trouble.
That’s perhaps why Google paid $1 billion to be the default search engine on iOS to Apple in 2014. This nugget emerged as evidence in an ongoing dispute between Google and Oracle.
That’s the cost of being the default search engine on iOS. Google simply couldn’t afford losing a large number of iOS users, which is why it agreed to pay up.
