Though America may be the "land of opportunity," Switzerland will be the best place to be born in 2013 according to a quality-of-life index from the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The EIU, a sister company to The Economist magazine, determines quality of life based on surveys of the population covering 11 factors including wealth, crime, family life, trust in government and the stability of the economy.
Income estimates for babies born in 2013 are based on projections for the year 2030, when those children will come of age.

The top ten best places to be born in 2013:
1. Switzerland
2. Australia
3. Norway
4. Sweden
5. Denmark
6. Singapore
7. New Zealand
8. Netherlands
9. Canada
10. Hong Kong

With its small but very stable economy, Switzerland comes in first, wealthy, healthy and trusting of its public institutions. The United States, "where babies will inherit the large debts of the boomer generation, languishes back in 16th place," the EIU explains. Feeling the effects of the European monetary crisis, "the largest European economies, France (26), Germany (tied with the U.S. for 16) and Britain (27), don't do particularly well."

The quality-of-life index also reflects changes in the Middle East and North Africa, where "life expectancy continues to increase steadily and political freedoms have spread across the globe," though Nigeria comes in as the worst place for a baby to be born in 2013.

Other interesting ratings include China, coming in at 49, and Russia, coming in at 72.
Back in 1988, the United States was in first place, with France in second, and West Germany in third. Zimbabwe was last, with Iraq second to last and Iran third to last.
For a more detailed explanation of how these numbers are calculated, see "the lottery of life methodology."
All said, the takeaway from the index seems to be that in today's world, a country's stability and trust in public institutions results in the best quality of life for its citizens.

These kinds of projection are done on the basis of people living standards. Of course people will be willing and love to live in those kinds of environments. People need peaceful and prosperous environment to live.

That’s why so many migration taking place.

...And keep it in mind WHERE we are born ....

TVK

Not sure I understand the point fully but that is not important and I am not keen to know either if it has anything to do with bashing anyone from anywhere.

For many South Indians the name of the place we hail from is part of our initials.

Regardless of where they live - India or as NRI - they can bring good or bad name to their place by what they do.

Even in a somewhat anonymous forum if people keep this in mind they may not write what they do sometimes ....

Surprising that Phillipines, Srllanka & Egypt are ahead of us(India) in the list....The economists & financial pundits are acclaiming that in 2030 India will overtake Japan to become the world's 3rd largest economy (in GDP terms)

History has proved again and again the children born in affluent and ideal conditions are least motivated. Come what may, the world will always need new thinkers and men with new and different ideas. I would prefer Somalia for a child to be born as yet another beacon to human sea. On a second thought India will still be the place for any soul to be born.

Dear Sir,

I would rather say "less competitive".

I have noted some of us who were born in families who had everything(in some countries for example Msia one does not have to be affluent to enjoy all comforts of live..being Upper Middle Class status is more than enough)..are less competitive and complacent with life.

Such types do study hard and secure good positions in life but the drive to be the top most at any cost is a bit less.

On the contrary some who have led less affluent lives can actually be ruthless to reach the top.

So both have plus points and drawbacks.

But being less competitive in live has plus points too cos one has lesser desires and tend to concentrate on finer aspects of life like God and Spirituality.

Being born in countries that have peace and opportunities in abundance without stress holds a great importance for a child to grow. Competition is everywhere. But fewer opportunities will give cut throat

competition. Even that, is only for survival.

My husband did the right thing when he made the decision to move abroad. He did a big favour to us and our children. No doubt our children may have achieved what they wanted to achieve in India. But it would

have been harder and definitely costed them their childhood happiness. As parents we would have been more worried and stressed with our life too.
