Former Prime Minister and eminant statesman Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee will be conferred the Nation's highest Civilian honour "Bhart Ratna" today. As a rare gesture President Prabab Mukherji will visit nonagenarian Shri Vajpayee's residence to confer upon him the prestigious award. Shri Vajapayee is most respected Parliamentarian of four decades standing. He is conferred Best Parliamentarain Award in 1994. "Well known and respected for his love for poetry and as an eloquent speaker, Shri Vajpayee is known to be a voracious reader. He is fond of Indian music and dance". His debates in Parliament has always been memorable His oratorial skills so impressed Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru that he predicted that Vajpayee would someday become India's Prime Minister.

Shri Vajpayee blongs to Brahmin Sect called "Kanyakubja Brahmins Their families spread over many places in UP and Madhya Pradesh. There is an interesting anectode about one class of Brahmins known as "Saryuparin Brahmins" in North India. When Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after his victory in Lanka, he wanted to perform "Aswamedha Yagna". For this purpose he invited the local Brahmins to perform the yagna. But they refused the offer since Rama did the sin of Brahma-hatya by killing Ravana, the son of a Brahmin. However some Brahmin families acceped the request of Lord Rama and performed the Yagna. For which they got Lands and wealth at the other side of River Sarayu. Thus the descendants of these families are called "Sarayupari Brahmins" even today. These Brahmins are also called "Kanyakubja Brahmins".

On this happy hour let us join the nation in saluting the great Statesman with our pranams.

Right from the days of Rama, it seems Bs are not united and firm in principle. As usual, few Bs went with Rama and ultimately prospered.

He is a nice gentleman. Talented in hindi and poetry. His government did some good things like building golden quadralateral road network. Is this all sufficient to provide Bharat Ratna? Did he touched so many lives like the others who received Bharat Ratna (MGR, MS etc).

Should have been Honoured Long ago.
At this age He is not in a state of mind/health to realise this Honour.
Better Late than never for this Great Citizen of Bharat.

Bharat Ratna award becomes highly controversial especially when it was conferred on MGR and Sachin Tendulkar.

A wild bird came on my dream and said MGR and MS are internationally acclaimed politician and musician respectively, and the present day politicians and musicians in most of the countries are their students. LOL.

When I woke up I realized their true status.

MS - She was a carnatic musician which has limited presence in South India, predominantly being practiced by Bs and Isai Vellalars. She knew all politicians well right from Rajaji. A state level politician who was riding very high in the mid 1990s and has a soft corner for MS, recommended her name along with C Subramaniam (for green revolution) for Bharat Ratna. Both were awarded.

MGR - He was a malayalee and his native place was Marudhur in Sri Lanka. He started his career in Cinema and joined politics and became very popular thru cinema. He was only a state level politician. It is not known how many people outside Tamil Nadu knows about him. After his death, in order to have serious presence in Tamil Nadu, the Congress Govt. conferred Bharat Ratna on him. But there was not much success.

As far as popularity is concerned, MS was known to only selected sections of the society and most of the NBs in Tamil Nadu may not even know her full name, let alone her music. Regarding MGR, cinema has elevated him to gain popularity.

If touching the lives of people is the sole criteria (in terms of popularity), almost all politicians, film personalities and singers etc. have to be conferred.

Please do not compare MGR with Sachin. MGR's revolutionary propagation of his thoughts through cinema turned many to follow good. No one in the world will have a vote bank after 20+ years of his death but him. His personal donations to calamities outside Tamilnadu, his alliance with Indira Gandhi and taking Tamilnadu out of the seperation mindset made him a right choice for the award. That anti-separation part as well as restoring God loving nature in Tamilians may have been a right choice to give him the award. Sachin Tendulkar stuck in Indian cricket for more than 20 years preventing some good talented people coming inside the team. His records would have been great if cricket is not a team game. His selfish records play resulted in India losing numerous times. It is my opinion and will vary between what people think.

I agree with you ...MGR brought the religiosity of Tamils to the forefront..He respected Indian culture and tradition...He tried to bring TN to the mainstream...He wanted Adi Dravidas to be called Adi Hindus..Had he lived longer may be he would have made AIADMK a Hindu party (not a joke!)..He respected all castes and communities...He is a nationalistic to the core! Who can forget the Mid Day meal scheme that was relaunched by him!

Once he joined a Dravidian party, he never visited any temple, except some donations to Mookambiga. He had sizeable appeal with Muslims and Christians. Therefore, it is a wild dream that AIADMS becomes a Hindu party.

If he was a nationalist, he should have given proper representation to Tamil speaking Bs in his Ministry. Fearing backlash from other Dravidian party, he gave the opportunity to a Kannada B viz. Hande.

The politics of TN involved B vs NB during his time ...MGR had the guts to give ticket to Hande to contest against MuKa who almost won...During his time there was a massive resurgence of Hindu forms of worship..He participated in Hindu meet with Kanchi Sankaracharya...Temple revival took place during his time..All this before RSS/Hindu Munnani could lay their foundation in TN

In Tamil Nadu, Bs have no role at all in politics even during Rajaji's time, who came into lime light in the pretext of independence. The fight was actually between a Dravidian party and Kamaraj. Kamaraj's death during 1975 made some section of Tamil Nadu people switched over to MGR, especially those who had anti-dravidian ideology.

In the Tamil film Engal Thangam released in 1968, he criticized Hari Katha concept.

Though he was not open in criticizing Bs like other Dravidian leader, he had not done anything really good to Bs. He acted as Jesus Christ in one Tamil film, which was not released.

He ordered the arrest of the Editor of Ananda Vikatan late Sri Balasubramanian for a cartoon. He has not respected freedom of expression.
