I think this belongs in this thread. I give below the sixteen recipients of the most recent US Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor that can be awarded in the U.S., something like Bharat Ratna.

1. Ernie Banks -- One of the greatest American baseball players.
2. Ben Bradlee -- Executive editor of The Washington Post newspaper
3. Bill Clinton -- Former President Bill Clinton of "I did not have sexual relations with that woman" fame
4. Daniel Inouye (posthumous) -- Politician
5. Daniel Kahneman -- Scholar of psychology
6. Richard Lugar -- politician
7. Loretta Lynn -- Country music legend
8. Mario Molina -- 1995 Nobel Prize in Chemistry
9. Sally Ride (posthumous) -- First American female astronaut
10. Bayard Rustin (posthumous) -- An adviser to MLK
11. Arturo Sandoval -- Jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer
12. Dean Smith -- Head coach of the University of North Carolina basketball team
13. Gloria Steinem -- Leader in the women’s liberation movement
14. Cordy Tindell -- Leader in the Civil Rights Movement
15. Patricia Wald -- First woman appointed to the US Circuit Court of Appeals

While discussing the subject of awarding Bharat Ratna I wish to draw the attention on the abolition of titles by our Constitution, which states:

PART III
FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS

Right to Equility
18. Abolition of titles.-
(1) No title, not being a military or academic distinction, shall be conferred by the State.
(2) No citizen of India shall accept any title from any foreign State.
(3) No person who is not a citizen of India shall, while he holds any office of profit or trust under the State, accept without the consent of the President any title from any foreign State.
(4) No person holding any office of profit or trust under the State shall, without the consent of the President, accept any present, emolument, or office of any kind from or under any foreign State.

Detailed discussions on this Article had taken place on April, 30, 1947 in The Constituent Assembly. While moving the resolution Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel observed that "titles were being abused for corrupting public life and their abolition should be provided for". How true his words are !
These discussions are available in the following weblink:

Times of India carried an interesting Article on the debate under the heading "To give or not to give: Awards' chequered history by Akshaya Mukul, TOI Crest issue dated Feb 6, 2010,"
To give or not to give: Awards' chequered history - Times Of India

Requests for, nominations, screening committee, recommendations, short listing, decsion of ther big boss. Final awardee will be decided in any of the above link or outside it. Once a decision is made, paperwork can be completed.
