BJP spokesperson Shrikant Sharma said that it will be good if the intelligentsia in the country discusses it. He was responding to a question as to whether the Bakr-Eid or Eid al-Adha, during which Muslims across the world sacrifice animals as part of their holy tradition, should be observed in an "eco-friendly" way as is the case with some other festivals.

BJP on Monday pitched for a debate on observance of Bakr-Eid (the feast of sacrifice), which will be celebrated tomorrow, in an "eco-friendly" way, saying the intelligentsia in the country should mull over it.
"The way we are becoming more eco-friendly, the way a campaign in this regard is going on in the country and the world... it is a matter of debate and there should be a debate over it. It will be good if the intelligentsia in the country discusses it. It will be good," BJP National Secretary Shrikant Sharma told a press conference. He was responding to a question as to whether the Bakr-Eid or Eid al-Adha, during which Muslims across the world sacrifice animals as part of their holy tradition, should be observed in an "eco-friendly" way as is the case with some other festivals. Many activists have been campaigning against slaughter of animals with a section of them arguing that not killing animals is good for environment. Sharma made it clear that whether eco-friendly Eid should be observed or not is a matter of debate. "There can be a discussion on whether there should be eco-friendly Eid or not. There is freedom of expression in our country and people have a right to express their different opinions... But, yes, there should be a debate over it."

Well Mecca went "bloodless" this Eid Ul Adha.

Previously pilgrims were allowed to slaughter sheep themselves at Mecca but it was not allowed this time.

[h=1]Hajj goes high-tech for bloodless Eid sacrifices[/h][h=5]September 12, 2016[/h]
The more than 1.8 million pilgrims from around the world participating in the hajj have the option this year of computerised coupons to order a sacrifice on the Muslim holidays marking the end of the hajj, without seeing the animalThanks to computer technology and SMS messaging, Muslims at the annual hajj pilgrimage to Mecca were able Monday to make their Eid al-Adha sacrifice without getting blood on their hands.

The more than 1.8 million pilgrims from around the world participating in the hajj had the option of computerised coupons to order a sacrifice on the Muslim holidays marking the end of the hajj—without even seeing the beast.
Many among the world's more than 1.5 billion Muslims themselves pick up a knife and kill sheep or other animals to mark the Al-Adha feast, Islam's holiest.
"If each pilgrim himself sacrificed a sheep, there wouldn't be enough space," said Rabie Saleh, a Sudanese in line at a Saudi post office at Mina's Jamarat Bridge, where pilgrims symbolically stoned the devil in the last major hajj rite.
The Eid al-Adha ritual commemorates Prophet Abraham's readiness to sacrifice his son, before he was replaced by a lamb, and symbolises the believers' submission to God.
The meat is shared out, especially among the needy.
The hajj to Islam's holiest sites, housed in western Saudi Arabia, is one of the five pillars of the religion that capable Muslims must perform at least once.
Over the centuries, when performing hajj meant an arduous desert journey, pilgrims themselves sacrificed animals before handing meat to the poor.
"But now there are millions of pilgrims. If each sacrificed a sheep, that would take days and days," said Mishal Qahtani, 33, a Saudi pilgrim.
So the Islamic Development Bank, based in the nearby Red Sea city of Jeddah, devised the electronic coupon system.
For 460 riyals ($123) this year, agencies located around holy sites visited by the pilgrims take charge of the sacrifice.
"As soon as someone buys from us, a request is sent to the Islamic Bank through our system and a sheep is slaughtered in an abattoir," explained Mansour al-Malki, 45, a postal worker.
The meat is then cut up and handed out to the less fortunate in the Mecca area or sent overseas, Malki said.
"Before, there were paper coupons but now it's computerised," Malki said.
Qahtani received a receipt showing he had paid for the sacrifice.
"They told me that I will soon get an SMS to tell me that a sheep has really been slaughtered," Qahtani said.

BTW I know Bakr means Goat..in India mainly goat or sheep are sacrificed but why call it Bakra Eid?

Dont Muslims in India find it a tad bit offensive?

The Eid is not about a Goat being sacrificed but its more about Prophet Ibrahim(Abraham) being asked to obey God's command to sacrifice his son Ismail(Isaac).

He was being tested and finally he was not asked to sacrifice his son and a sheep was sacrificed instead.

There is a very similar Puranic story where a guest goes to a poor Brahmins house and asks them to sacrifice their son and they do so and cook the son for the guest but the son is brought back alive.

Eid Ul Adha means festival of sacrifice.....it does not have any Bakr/Goat word in original text.

Out here we call it Hari Raya Haji or Hari Raya Aidil Adha.

No Goat or cow word is used to.

Do Muslims in India themselves call it Bakr Eid?

Don't they mind?

Welcome this! Why sacrifice animals for this festival!!

Well we Hindus ourselves had Vedic Animals sacrifice...Goat slaughter goes on in Kali temples around India.
Buffaloes are slaughtered on Durga Pooja in Nepal.

So??

What to do?

Many cultures all around the world had even human sacrifice.

The problem is humans want to eat meat but find excuses saying "God wants it or Aatha or Kaliaatha wants meat etc"

True sacrifice is not killing another being ..its about sacrificing the negativity in us.

Red rivers running across Dhaka post the rain today...The water got mixed with the oozing blood of the sacrificed goats turning it gory red!!

I too saw this post but it may not be factual. I have no proof that it is false, but it is unbelievable.

SAVAR, Bangladesh — On the worst days, the toxic stench wafting through the Genda Government Primary School is almost suffocating. Teachers struggle to concentrate, as if they were choking on air. Students often become lightheaded and dizzy. A few boys fainted in late April. Another retched in class.
The odor rises off the polluted canal — behind the schoolhouse — where nearby factories dump their wastewater. Most of the factories are garment operations, textile mills and dyeing plants in the supply chain that exports clothing to Europe and the United States. Students can see what colors are in fashion by looking at the canal.
“Sometimes it is red,” said Tamanna Afrous, the school’s English teacher. “Or gray. Sometimes it is blue. It depends on the colors they are using in the factories.”
Nearly three months ago, the Rana Plaza factory building collapsed.
But it also often means ignoring costly environmental regulations. Bangladesh’s garment and textile industries have contributed heavily to what experts describe as a water pollution disaster, especially in the large industrial areas of Dhaka, the capital. Many rice paddies are now inundated with toxic wastewater. Fish stocks are dying. And many smaller waterways are being filled with sand and garbage, as developers sell off plots for factories or housing.

The red water need not be blood.[h=2]What is Red Tide?[/h]Red tide is a phenomenon caused by algal blooms (Wikipedia definition) during which algae become so numerous that they discolor coastal waters (hence the name "red tide"). The algal bloom may also deplete oxygen in the waters and/or release toxins that may cause illness in humans and other animals. Species in the United States that release these harmful toxins include:

  • Alexandrium fundyense - found along the Atlantic coast from the Canadian Maritimes to southern New England
  • Alexandrium catenella - found along the Pacific coast from California to Alaska
  • Karenia brevis - found in the Gulf of Mexico along the west coast of Florida
