Chennai woke up to the news of a bomb blast at Chennai Railway station early today morning. The blast occured as the train was coming into the railway station.

from The Hindu
A woman was killed and at least 18 others were injured in a low intensity blast in one of the coaches of the Bangalore-Guwahati superfast express (Train No. 12509) at Chennai Central railway station on Thursday morning.

The victim has been identified as Swati (22) from Guntur who was travelling from Bangalore to Vijayawada. Four passengers are said to be critical and have been admitted to the GH. Of the 14 others injured, most have injuries on the legs, while one person has a neck injury.

Police say the explosion was reported shortly after the Guwahati Express pulled into platform no. 9 at the railway station at around 7-30 a.m.

The blast has damaged three coaches (S3, S4 and S5). As of now, police are yet to confirm from which coach the blast was triggered.

Many trains approaching Chennai were detained at various stations. There was commotion in the busy central station and traffic congestion on all roads leading to it.

Southern Railway Additional General Manager S. Vijayakumaran said the three damaged coaches would be detached from the formation for detailed forensic analysis. The other coaches are being readied for onward journey.

A multi-agency probe was launched to investigate the source and nature of the bombs. The explosions came two days after the State police arrested Mohammed Zakir Hussain, a Sri Lankan national, who was part of an alleged plot to target vital installations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

The arrival and departures of several morning trains from Chennai Central has been delayed even as the Government Railway Police and Railway Protection Force have cordoned off the area and pressed in sniffer dogs and bomb detection squads. Investigators were perusing the CCTV footage in Chennai and Bangalore to look for clues.

Tamil Nadu Director-General of Police K. Ramanujam said the cause of explosion was not established yet.

The Railways has opened two helplines in Chennai044 25357398 and 044 64502416 — and one in Bangalore 080 22876288.

PTI adds that one person has been detained in connection with the blast.

I sincerely wish more members post their condolences to the Victims's family which is really Shocking.

Condolence to family of the Girl Swathi who lost her life in this blast . She was returning back home and since she did not get normal ticket she booked the ticket through TATKAL service only to meet with this tragedy . Her marriage was supposed to take place in 2 months . It is really unfortunate that some Cowards in order to make a political point are targeting innocent people . I feel the bomb was supposed to blast at some part of SeemAndhra region where elections were still due but as the train got delayed at Jolarpet junction the bomb blasted in Chennai . This is just one of the possibilities . I hope the culprits are nabbed soon and the people injured in the blasts recover quickly .

This is more sensitive subject and i really wish more members take part in condemning this cowardly act.

Really shocking news on May day! Our heartfelt condolence to Ms. Swathi's family. My her soul rest in peace.

What I don't understand is why these bombs are not detected earlier? Does a person keep the bomb before

getting down from the train or do the passengers miss to spot the unclaimed baggage with a bomb inside?

THOSE WHO ARE IN CHENNAI>> PLEASE BE SAFE And DON't Go Out

Mohammed Zakir Hussain, a Sri Lankan Tamil arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police here on Tuesday, had allegedly conducted a reconnaissance mission as part of a conspiracy to attack foreign missions in southern India.

Hussain had taken photographs of the U.S. Consulate in Chennai, the Israeli Consulate in Bangalore and other vital installations, and studied their topography at the behest of Pakistani diplomat Amir Zubair Siddiqui, police sources said on Wednesday.
Siddiqui, Counsellor (Visa) at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, and his associate Boss, alias Shah, are being named as accused along with Hussain. Siddiqui allegedly engaged Hussain to gather information on vital installations in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. Shah, also said to be a Pakistani diplomat, was part of the plot designed by Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI), the sources told The Hindu.

“We are naming Siddiqui and Shah as accused in the case … Hussain has confessed that he was taking instructions from them. This is the second case of terror activities involving Siddiqui. In September 2012, one Thameem Ansari, who was arrested on charges of videographing defence establishments, said he was working for Siddiqui,” a top police official said.
Central intelligence agencies had been maintaining a close watch on Hussain, a frequent flier between Colombo and Chennai in the recent past. With specific input that some Lashkar-e-Taiba operatives would attempt to land on the Tamil Nadu coast from northern Sri Lanka to target vital installations, security agencies had stepped up vigil at vantage points, police sources said.

“We had an alert that Hussain was also asked to prepare fake passports to facilitate the arrival of two Pakistani nationals in India. Some incriminating materials were also seized from him, the details of which cannot be disclosed at this stage,” a police official said.

The train was running late...It was supposed to have reached Guntur at the time of blast...Modi was also to visit Guntur yesterday...We can surely guess that this is the handiwork of Islamic militants

Heartfelt condolences to the techie who became the victim...She shifted her berth to be close to her friend...

Feel very sad for the young lady!

Look at security inside the station..Any one can enter or exit at will..There seems to be people entering the station walking along the tracks from Basin bridge, there is one entrance from Waltax road, another from EVR salai and one can enter from suburban terminal too...No one is stopping these..So all security is a big mockery

TN police probe if suspected ISI agent has links with blast - NEWS TODAY

Chennai: Tamil Nadu CB-CID police is working on some leads which they have stumbled upon in connection with the twin bomb blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati Express today that left one woman dead and 14 others injured.

Sources in the investigation agency said they were also looking into whether the suspected ISI agent, a Sri Lankan national Mohammed Zahir Hussain, arrested two days ago, had any role into the blast.

However, top officials of the CB-CID wing remained tight-lipped over the investigation.

A police official involved in the investigation told on condition of anonymity that they suspect that the blast would not have been possible without the involvement of "home-grown terror modules".

Dear Rajkumar,

Politicians care two hoots for such incidents. All they want is to win elections at any cost and amass wealth. Why should they care if someone lose their life in the process!!!!!!!!! Someone loses their life and someone else gets hanged for it. For them its all in the game.

Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. It proves again and again that the perpetrators have no faith in god and continue to falsely believe they have been deputed by Him. The incidence proved that god runs his own will but the victim unfortunately is an "akasmaath" victim. It will be best if there is proper response by the law & order machinery and concrete reaction plans to eliminate or forestall such misadventures

II is interesting that these law enforcement people ensure their names are known to the press but rarely show up to describe concrete findings. Unless they have been vigilant all along their investigation is likely to be stalled. I hope there is pressure for them to report progress periodically

Tks ji
You have a misconception about our investigating agencies , they perform well and trace the

culprits what if they ensure publicity for themselves . it is human nature .. only they take time .

it is the judicial sytem that is at fault with multi level appeals and stay . conviction gets very

difficult in all criminal cases .Even death sentance cases , they mostly do not get carried out ,So

there is no respect for the judicial system or the law.

recently dozens in the death row waiting

for it to be carried out over 14 years got clemency due to inordinate delay.

TKS Ji,

While I agree with Krish Ji
major portion of his posting, only thing where I have to partly disagree is the area of ‘ human nature’.

In my experience, in everyday life, the Reporter/Journalist who attends and prepare the reports after visiting the scene of crime will have the first hand information with photographs, data collected with interviews, etc. But mentioning of names of such Officers in the Report may serve following purposes IMO:

  1. For the Reader, the report gets more authenticated by mention of name of the Officer investigating the case.
  2. For the Reporter, he grabs this opportunity to do the favour of publishing the name of the Investigating Officer for obvious reasons.
  3. And for the Police Officer, mention of his name in the news will be a pep and he will exhibit more responsibility and enthusiasm in the case

I understand the comments and tend to agree.
My point is that competence of these agencies must count.

What have they actually achieved in terms of either catching the right criminals or prevent a major terrorist attack from happening.
I may have wrong conception (and can be corrected) but I see these so called law enforcement characters buried in corruption.

It is more than incompetence in terms of demonstrated results - it is also about untrustworthiness of theselaw enforcement types.

I have no problem that some fellow with a name is investigating but where is he held accountable for results..

The TN police are not duds..They have been at one point considered next to Scotland...Some of the famous cases deciphered include the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Coimbatore Blasts, Auto Shankar case etc..Even the latest twin brahmin sisters murder in West Mambalam area in 2011 were caught by our own police
