Bluetooth is a standard that has become almost universal in the technology industry. It is a base requirement, and it is quite rare to see any device without Bluetooth. Speakers, phones, tablets, laptops, gadgets and much, much more have Bluetooth built in.
However, its archaic limitations still apply, and it still has a short-range and slow data-transfer rates. In fact, due to its bigger range and much faster speeds, many often opt for WiFi instead of Bluetooth.
Now, the Bluetooth SIG, the organization behind Bluetooth, is announcing an update to the Bluetooth Standard that will give it a 100% speed boost along with a four-times increase in range (Current range just around 333 feet).
Finally, Bluetooth is getting mesh-networking support, so that devices can form an interconnected Bluetooth network, effectively increasing the range of the Bluetooth Network. If there are sufficient devices in between, then data can be transferred from the first to the last device, whereas this won’t be possible without a mesh-network, where the last device would be unreachable.
These developments are primarily for IoT (Internet of Things) devices, since 2016 is expected to be the year when we will see widespread adoption of the so called ‘smart’ devices, and an updated Bluetooth Standard would certainly help.
