The aerospace industry has been heavily dependent on 3d printing technology. The use of 3d printing technology has boosted the production of engines and aircraft parts by three to four times. Currently, giants in the industry such as Boeing and Airbus are in talks with Monash Univeristy and Amaero Engineering to develop 3d printed gas turbine engines. (2 metal jet engines already created)
This week, Geekwire reported that Boeing recently has filed a patent application for its 3d printed aircraft parts seen below.

For years, Boeing had troubles with the shipment of required aircraft parts. If 3d scanned files of aircraft parts could be stored in an easily accessible location, Boeing could print the missing or defective parts of an aircraft in hours. This would eliminate the extensive delays of shipments and sometimes, damages caused to the parts during deliveries.
According to Geekwire, Boeing has over 300 3d printed aircraft production parts, which requires 10 different production programs. In total, the Boeing Aircraft currently has over 20,000 parts 3d printed with plastic.

Although Boeing uses plastic based 3d printing method at present, the patent applications includes metal, alloy and plaster based 3d printing techniques, which may be implemented very soon.
