A church with a cross in it that belonged to the 7th Day Adventists overnight turned into a temple adorned with a portrait of Shiva after what some Hindu groups in Aligarh termed the "successful ghar wapasi" (reconversion) of 72 Valmikis who had become Christians in 1995.

There was an elaborate shuddhi karan (purification) ceremony on Tuesday inside the church in Asroi, 30km from Aligarh. Children from the village soon took over the premises and were seen playing in it by afternoon on Wednesday. A cross was allegedly remove from the church and placed outside the gate and a portrait of Shiva installed.

Khem Chandra, Sangh pracharak and pramukh of Dharam Jagran Vivad in Aligarh, said, "This is called ghar wapasi, not conversion. They left by choice and today they have realized their mistake and want to come back. We welcome them. We can't let our samaj scatter, we have to hold it tight. I have told them that honour comes from within the community and not from outside." Chandra added that in the years that followed their adoption of Christianity, he met heads of the eight Valmiki families numerous times to convince them to reconsider their decision.

Appreciate this...We should do more such Waapasi to protect the native religion!

However those converted should be guided on the right tenets of Hinduism.

Bhajan classes, celebration of Hindu festivals together, removal of any social stigma attached to caste can be some of the initiatives that need to be taken on a continual basis so that they do not fall for some other bait at a later date!

What are we supposed to feel? I wonder?

Changing the Father what does a person gain?
From Jehovah to Shiva..it's all but a name,
Temple or Church that's just a game,
Directionless change again and again.

A new name..A new Game..a New Role,
A new dance of the religious Rock and Roll!
A discotheque of confusion brings all in the fold,
A new member..a sacrificial foal.

Tossed again and again and forever and ever,
Samsara seems the preferred banner,
Creating fear..man runs hither thither,
A new God is a new fear..not the prescribed manner!

the feeling in india among hindus is they have suffered enough of minority appeasement.

many poor and the gullible who have got converted in tribal belt .dalits , north east etc are getting reconverted to hinduism with govt encouragement

I do not know if it is wise . but it is a fact that it is taking place

Anti conversion law must address this issue and protect waapasis. Of course, NOC, affidavit and completion of civil procedures must be ensured.

I wish all descendants of vincent iyer colony from tiruchy return to sanatana dharma!

Dear Krish ji,

It was not the poor and gullible that converted in the past..it was the poor and neglected that converted in the past..so other religions took advantage of this situation.

Now since these very same people have re claimed their Hindu status(I prefer the word Reclaim instead of Re convert)..Hindus have to make sure the fangs of casteism in religion does not suck the life out of these people again.

But I doubt if we Hindus will ever learn...I feel instead of giving men religion its better if he learns the art of living!

God is One without a second,
Yet man is a four fold clan!
If man is four how can God be One?
Is He dissociative an Identity or totally None?

As many people react, this is not something surprising (it was bound to happen - with or without religious involvement). For public information, there is nothing called re-conversion to Hinduism. It is pure LAW, CONSTITUTIONAL SCHEME OF THINGS and false promises by missionery activists. In India, under the Constitution, the reservation is granted to : SCHEDULE CASTE & SCHEDULE TRIBES. ST is a set of people who live in certain conditions/ certain locations (this benefit is extended to people living with the boundary listed out under the Law) whereas SC is certain sect of people who were identified as group who suffered due to their occupation/ varna - the government drew a list of such communities and declared them all as SCHEDULED CASTES. And from day one, the SCs enjoy phenomenal benefits, no doubt about it. Every politician go all over the place to appease SCs.. Now what happens a SC convert to Christianity or Islam. These two organised religions don't practice casteism (at least on paper). So if one convert to these religion, the government benefits will automatically comes to an end... Here the missionaries lure them into conversion and provide them benefits from their fund (with a promise that, they are working on extending the benefits to converted christians also). Poor people won't know that IT CAN NEVER HAPPEN !!! Nor the christians can continue funding them to equal the government benefits... They will end up funding same set of converted people (this will result in decline in performance as they wont be able to convert more numbers !!). The Christians approached various courts in India on this issue of "'DALIT Christians". Even Minorities Commission said, NOT POSSIBLE. Kerala High Court asked them to file an affidavit stating that in Christianity too they practice casteism - then the case can proceed further. Recently, the Bishops and christian activities staged a protest in Parliament Street for dalit christian reservation... Some converts realised that they got fooled by christians. Their situation is worse than they were as Hindu scheduled castes !!! This is a ultra powerful tool (state social welfare benefits). The Madras High Court judge, who Katju accused (Ashok Kumar), is a born christian but when a vacancy came for SC candidiate as district judge, he quickly obtained a Hindu Scheduled Caste Certificate, applied, used his clout and managed the job. With this he went all the way to High Court... Dalit Christian reservation will not happen (at least for some years to come) and one will start seeing episodes like this more often...

to most belonging to reservation category

religion does not make sense .

if economic benefits flow any religion is OK.

They change religion based on economic necessity and intermarry ignoring religion . some have multiple religion depending on need .

ultimately it is roti,kapda ,makaan

whichever religion gives it to them ,they will go with them'

those who have experienced extreme poverty and pangs of hunger can only appreciate their plight
