Rituals during the deaths are always performed with wet clothes. Hence, in the normal times, one should avoid doing jons like lighting the lamps in wet clothes. If you have the close chance to observe, the rituals performed during the deaths are prohibited in normal times.

Generally I am skeptical of acts that are done without reason, or the reason has been forgotten.
But like Mr. Venket said, some acts that we do during observing death, is not done at other times. I never found any reason, but I still follow it so as not to hurt the feelings of other family members.
Going back to your scenario, if I am coming in from rain and being wet into a dark room, I will light a lamp in wet cloths. It is the circumstances that dictates it.

Dear Usha,

Many rituals are done after the demise of a person. All these 'ashuba kAryams' are done with wet clothes. The Swami kAryams

are supposed to be done with 'dry madi' clothes. Keeping a lamp facing South, making one line kOlams, rolling rice balls while

eating, washing feet after visiting a temple, taking wet clothes while leaving our relative's house, doing namaskAram to the

direction South / a person who is lying down etc are prohibited, because they are done during 'ashubam' rituals.

we have many pazhakkams.....veettu pazhakkam....ooru pashakkam....maavattam pazhakkam...like iyer/iyengar pazhakkam...

so many are local customs....sometimes these customs cannot generalize.....many customs are entirely different each other....

so generally follow the home traditions based on many generations......follow elders words/ or aathu vadyars....

A wet cloth is considered as dry if it is wrung seven times ("உதறுதல்"" is the tamil word. I am at a loss to get the right equivalent in English to this word. May be like writer Sujatha used to say, this word is similar to the tamil word "விளாவுதல்" in so far as both words have no English equal). Elders who used to go to river in villages for bath in the early morning, would wash their clothes too and then wear the same after wringing it seven times and proceed to do all subha karmas on the way home. இதைத்தான் "மேலையார் செய்வனகள்" என்று ஆண்டாள் கூறினாள் போலும்.

In the book ''Jeevanin gathagathy" written by Srivatsa Soma deva sarma and published by sri surabi jagathguru sathapthy publications, chennai 33 in page no. 32 he has written that people who are in pretha bhavam without entering pithru bhavam after having duly done apara karyams by their descendents are liking wetclothes with water falling down from the cloth, anticlock wise pradhakshinam, hairs in the head without pinnnal, spreading all over the head.

striking the the thighs with the hand,, ,without applying sacred marks in the forehead , after finishing their bath going with wetclothes water pouring on the floor,tieing the legs fingers, pouring water on the person who is lying down, applying sacred marks on the person who is lying down position, walking with head hairs spread over in the head etc;

persons who met their death in accidents will be roaming in pretha bhavam and as they like these things they will be like to live with you which will give problem to you. That is why after taking bath in the river the clothes must be spiined and then they are wearing it and go to their houses. Only for the welfare of us the rishis on those days after seeing these things by their "gnana eyes" have written and it must be followed.

This is my opinion. After having spinned in the washing machine( water will not pour down on the floor ) you may use that wet cloth you can do during rainy season in foreign countries . or there is no other go in some specific occasions which may come rarely.

with oil lamp i dont think with wet clothes is not done for good things.In some communities the oil lamp will be lighted near the head of the body kept in the house. That is lighted with wet cloth by the family member.

For electric lamp, electric shock will be the problem.

I advise you not to do this anyway.

Thanks Madam for endorsing the good ideas. If we insist on them (may not be in a fewer than few families) you (i.e. us, we are) called tyrants. Better to swim with the tides. Just on this I got an idea. If somebody or group can start a quiz programme - questions based only on different traditions with a good prize money or free ticket to Hawaii or places like that, it will catch a mite or two. I am sorry it is what is. Oh, the good old days of promise and progress!

Even if the modern generation does not want to follow 'sasthram', they can tie up their hair at least for hygiene's sake!

They just go around, dropping the loose hair on food, floor and everywhere!!

I have seen warnings near wash basins, in a few hotels - "Do not comb your hair here!" :nono:
