I came to Chennai in 1972 and since then used to cross this river more frequently and at every time, I cross, had to experience the stinking awful smell. I used to wonder why the measures taken right from the period of British and the subsequent Governments which came to power to restore the river have failed and resulted in vain. The condition of the river is deteriorating day by day despite the implementation of various schemes and spending several crores on restoration.
It is an important but highly polluted river running inside Chennai city emanating owful smell.
Hope the initiative of the present Government will certainly yield better result.

Chennai: In a major initiative, the Tamil Nadu government will launch the Cooum River Restoration Project involving a total cost of Rs 3,833.62 crore, including Rs 2,077.29 crore for relief and rehabilitation of the affected families.
Presenting the budget for the year 2014-'15 in the State Assembly, Finance Minister O Panneerselvam said the project would be executed through the Chennai River Restoration Trust as the Nodal Agency.
Announcing allocation of Rs 500 crore in the budget for the year 2014-15, he said this massive project would be implemented in a time line of five years.
He said the rising population and fast expanding infrastructure exerted a huge pressure on the city environment. 'As part of the restoration of rivers in Chennai, work on the plugging of 179 sewage outfalls out of the identified 337 outfalls at a cost of Rs 150 crore has commenced and will be completed by 2015', he added.
Panneerselvam said plugging the remaining 158 outfalls at a cost of Rs 163 crore would commence during the current fiscal.
Not just Cooum, but the other rivers in the State would also get benefitted, as the government has allocated Rs 119.98 crore to continue the implementation of the intra-State river linkage projects. A sum of Rs 3,669,79 crore has been allocated in the budget estimates 2014-15 for the irrigation sector.
