Seven months after a gas pricing plan was cleared by the Union cabinet, Arvind Kejriwal has asked his state anti-corruption arm to register a first information report (FIR) against Veerappa Moily, Murli Deora, Reliance Industries and its chairman, Mukesh Ambani, among others. It's an act of political expediency. Given recent incidents of hate crimes in Delhi and an uncertain power and water situation, Kejriwal should focus on solving problems at home. Subsequently, if he has any novel ideas on pricing natural resources, he could share it with people.
It is important that the current transition to an eventual market-determined price continue. In the absence of such a transition, India will find it difficult to attract global companies to explore blocks. Kejriwal's gambit, which has to do with launching Aam Aadmi Party on a national platform, should not be allowed to stall this process. A market-determined price is the best possible signal for both producers and consumers. Those who stand in the way are not helping aam admi in any way. If a series of administered prices fixed by government officials could work well the Soviet Union — also officially established in the name of aam admi — would still exist.
