A video featuring Deepika Padukone—in which the Bollywood actress is talking about the prerogative of choice—is now a viral hit.

Vogue and Padukone have a lot in common: They’re both from an industry that is based on fetishising, objectifying and reinforcing sexist standards of beauty on women. So when these two forces combined talk about women empowerment, one is left a bit confused, because, let’s be honest, the fashion and Bollywood do not empower anyone—women most of all.

Fashion and Bollywood thrive on women’s insecurities about themselves and their bodies. They are the propaganda machines of an ultra-narcissistic culture that is constantly telling us the right and the wrong way to do things.
........................................

However, she continues to appear in movies or songs that objectify women in the worst possible manner. In her last film, Happy New Year, released in December 2014, she performed a pole dance for an item number. In the song, she is referred to as the “the hottest firecracker.”

...........................................

Freedom and empowerment is not something that can be sold through the glossy pages of a magazine. It can only come through experience and self-knowledge.
What Vogue and Padukone are doing is merely telling a whole generation of women to grow up in a bimbo culture—women can be comfortable with the choices they have made, as long as they fit the stereotypical definition of beauty and conform to the latest fashion trends.

If Deepika Padukone has to stay in the market, she has to comply with the demands of the 'bimbo world' -- otherwise she will be left out in no time!

It is nice that she is trying to create awareness of various kinds including mental health crisis -- through these, she is sending the women among her fans a strong message on real life and how to be strong amidst crisis!

The truth is that a certain amount of sensationalizing on the assets of a woman's body is appreciated in any culture and at any time - and one that cannot be erased! In that perspective, I do not agree with Deepika Padukone that since body awareness is on prime focus, current generation is less liberated than the times of our forefathers.(Ref: In her book, The Beauty Myth, she wrote, “More women have more money and power and scope and legal recognition than we have ever had before; but in terms of how we feel about ourselves physically, we may actually be worse off than our un-liberated grandmothers.”)Even Orthodox and most traditional folks, including women, admire those others with astounding physical beauty and would love to appreciate the gender that possesses the most of it! (I am pretty traditional, religious and orthodox -- but even then, I so wished I would see 'pole dancing' when I visited Vegas earlier! The beauty of a female body cannot be overlooked and thanks to pole dancers for flaunting their assets so freely!).

The right frame of mind is to accept it all - including women shown as 'beautiful babes' and adored for their body. The right action would be to not indulge one's thoughts in mere beauty and fashion related things *always* but have a healthy balance that includes other accomplishments as well.

The average movie-goer is pretty smart - they know how to strike a reasonable balance. Besides this, parenting and demands of the society and life itself instill a sense of responsibility in most that they wake up to these calls at some time, that worrying about the message a Bollywood industry poses onto women seems trivial.

Just my thoughts, anyone can agree or disagree.

I dont feel its wrong for a woman to 'use" her sensuality to project herself.

Sensuality is the best weapon for a woman.

Women empowerment does not mean that one has to be totally without sex appeal.

As a woman one needs to be happy with the God's given gift of sex appeal and one needs the sense and sensibility to use it right.

BTW I do not see anything wrong in a Pole Dance..the Pole dance is a very sensuous dance and the Pole does NOT really represent the phallus as most males think!LOL

The pole is just for the woman to balance herself while dancing.

Sensuous dances are like "prayer" itself..it makes the body connect with the mind and soul.

You guys should try putting on some sensuous music and dance away with gay abandon and feel the mind and body fuse..its like a state of meditation itself..the mantra here is just yourself.

BTW being body conscious is not about insecurity and being narcissistic..its all about worshiping one's self..after all every year people do Ayudha Pooja and worship weapons..so likewise..being body conscious is a woman's secret Ayudha Pooja.

The body is weapon after all..you have to be a mastermind to known when to launch an "attack".

But I have noted that some celebrities or models tend to be hypocrites as they get older.

For example when they were young, slim and sexy they banked upon their looks to get to the top of the career but as they age and become plump and not that great looking anymore that time they speak out against women being forced by society to be a sex object!LOL

This is what I call a bloody hypocrite!LOL

Then they start to give some blah blah blah about true beauty being a state of mind..brains..an attitude etc rather than just outward appearance.

I feel this sound so fake cos its just justifying that they are not attractive anymore and trying to make themselves feel better.

Why dont people be honest enough to admit that physical beauty changes with age and they had their heyday long back and now succumbed to the ravages of time that devours everyone eventually.

Its irritating to see people claim all of a sudden that beauty is not physical when once upon a time its these same people who would have even posed nude!LOL

I agree that Deepika is quite hypocritical because ultimately she is making money by showing off her body. She has done plenty of item songs as well, which are nothing but titillation. She better acknowledge which industry she is in.

There is a palpably aggressive undertone in the My Choice video, which features Deepika Padukone (also the narrator) and 98 other women, and has gone viral. The video alienates the opposition (people who deny women their choices), and its lines lack the power to evoke emotion and the depth to invoke thought. From sifting through the angry responses to this video online, it appears that a vast number of viewers have taken exception to the line, “Sex outside marriage, my choice”. I don’t believe, however, that the intent here is to refer to an extra-marital affair, as has been widely misperceived — “sex outside marriage” could also be a reference to consensual sex had by, say, divorced women. The uproar is a result of the inefficacy of the words and the delicate nature of the topic. The line, after all, follows, “My choice: to have sex before marriage”,making it easier for viewers to misunderstand.
.......................
The video says it’s wrong to be upset when a woman returns at 4 a.m.. The concern here, however, is more than just the freedom of a woman to come home late; it is about the dangers fraught in a society that isn’t safe for women yet, especially during nights. Consequences, after all, hurt more than choices do. The video, in its emphasis on the latter, skips this conveniently. Can a woman take care of herself? Of course. Can a concerned person worry about said woman’s safety? Of course. No reason to believe that the two are mutually exclusive, as the video suggests.
While Padukone recites the lines with a foot-tapping instrumental score in the background, you are shown monotonous black-and-white shots of pretty women, for the most part, smiling, frowning, and at one point, even yelling — this last visual perhaps best summarising the tone of the lines. The overall focus of the video, seemingly unintended, is more on alienation than liberation. This is never more evident than in the lines: “My songs, your noise. My order, your anarchy. Your sins, my virtues.” You are given what seem like ultimatums. “My love for you cannot (be replaced), so treasure that!” You are also told in no uncertain terms not to “get cocky.” It reaches a soaring high at “I’m the snowfall. You’re the snowflake.” The theme is clear: me versus you, woman versus man. Well, how about woman AND man?
Why should a women's empowerment be against to man's empowerment? Why can we not have both be empowered.
There are many more empowered women.

What is Women Empowerment?

In the simplest of words it is basically the creation of an environment where women can make independent decisions on their personal development as well as shine as equals in society.
Women want to be treated as equals so much so that if a woman rises to the top of her field it should be a commonplace occurrence that draws nothing more than a raised eyebrow at the gender. This can only happen if there is a channelized route for the empowerment of women.
Thus it is no real surprise that women empowerment in India is a hotly discussed topic with no real solution looming in the horizon except to doubly redouble our efforts and continue to target the sources of all the violence and ill-will towards women.

In 2014, Lena Dunham, who stars in the TV series ‘Girls’, applauded by critics for its realistic portrayal of women, disappointed her fans when she appeared on the cover of the magazine Vogue. The actress, who has lashed out often at society’s unattainable standards of beauty and has even published a book Not That Kind of a Girl on, among other things, her battles as a young girl with body image, appeared on the glossy cover, a carbon copy of every other Vogue woman: stylised, blemishless and airbrushed. Fans complained that she looked nothing like herself.
When a magazine such as Vogue that has been endorsing the same standards of beauty over decades, and has even managed to convince a Dunham to bend her beliefs for them, comes out with a video that seeks to empower women, it is indeed ironic. ‘My choice’, directed by Homi Adajania and starring Deepika Padukone and 98 other women from different walks of life, seeks to send out a powerful image. What it does instead is to misunderstand the term empowerment, speak of women’s choices within the personal domain rather than the public, and package feminism in a seductive manner causing more harm to the movement than good. What could have been a promising video on the right of women to make their own choices becomes a wasted opportunity.

Deepika Padukone’s My Choice video is suffering severe flak from the society. So much that both men and women are bashing the actress for featuring in such a feminist movie that promotes adultery, cheating, disloyalty and anything but women empowerment. Sonam Kapoor is known for keeping quite a close watch on DP (pun intended). So in her recent media interaction, the Khoobsurat actress was asked to comment on DP’s ‘feminist video.’ To which, the leggy lass gave outright sarcasm saying “I don’t have to make a video to voice my opinions.” Yes, she starts there…
Talking in detail about what she believes feminism is, Sonam said, “Elitist women have always had wrong ideas about feminism. They think male-bashing… hating men…makes you a true feminist. I don’t have to make a video to voice my opinions. My actions have always spoken louder than my words. I’m proud to be a woman and I respect my independence. I’m never afraid to give my opinion on any matter. That’s what feminism is about.”
Well, she does make a sensible point there but all in the sense that disapproves of Deepika Padukone and her male-bashing idea. However, Sonam isn’t the only actress raging against DP’s video. Sonakshi Sinha too had opposed saying, “Women empowerment is not about what clothes you wear and who you want to have sex with and stuff like that.

The best for women to do is just do what we like but keep the juicy details a secret.

Its our choice to be secretive.

But dont be a hypocrite..if we are bad secretly be bad..do not project ourselves as good.

LOL!

Sonam is known for passing comments about other actress even though she has yet to prove her worth.

Sonakshi is from a different era..she looks like some 1960's actress ..so she should get into a time machine and come back to the future.

Both Sonam and Sonakshi must be jealous of Deepika cos Deepika is simply gorgeous..Sonakshi can never dream to be a Deepika.

Check this out..Dog Version!

Someone sent it to me.

It is all hypocrisy. The actress who started the TOI cleavage controversy is showing herself manipulating her own bra for the video. The only difference is that in one case she got paid, and in the other she didn't!

Dont say anything about Deepika..I admire her!

Hot chicks get to say anything and get away with it.

That is how the world revolves!LOL

Interestingly, such statements are coming primarily from women in the film world. Is there any connection?

Deepika has tinges of masculinity in her looks. She is not feminine as much as, say, Priyanka Chopra. Deepika's entire range of assets won't stand a chance before Priyanka's just lips. Hope I am not sensored. LOL.

So Deepika is not all that hot as imagined.

If there is a world revolving around Deepika, it is a small one like the Globe on the table in the class room. LOL.

dear Vaagmi ji,

Agreed...a truly beautiful woman will have a hint of masculinity and a truly handsome male will have a hint of femininity.

See Hritik Roshan..he is handsome..macho yet has a hint of beautiful looks when he smiles you can see femininity in him.

Nature balances us to have best of both in us.

I used to be crazy about Deepika's dad Prakash Padukone when I was younger..and now I admire Deepika!

Wow I am nuts for the whole family!

I like Deepikas face cos its very South Indian with classic looks and what a figure..what a height..totally natural girl..very slim..no bulges here and there.

And she does not look like a typical GSB girl..most GSB females are not that tall and mostly are very fair skinned with ultra feminine soft beautiful looks..Deepika on the other hand is sharp featured, tan and rocks with sex appeal.

I simply love her.

I agree with what you have said but with some differences:

1. I would prefer to put it this way. A truly beautiful woman will have hints of masculinity in her thought processes and actions and very little of that in her looks. In looks she has to be just femininity personified. Men are put off by the occasional baring of hints of masculinity in women. A handsome male will have a hint of femininity in his processes and actions and not looks. I do not know how a woman feels when the femininity in a male's looks bares itself. The women know it better.

2. I have my own views about HR. I also have heard young woman speaking about him not in an appreciative manner. To say the least they call him girlish.

3. Agreed.

4. That is okay. I too am a fan of Prakash.

5. No comments. LOL.

6. She looks okay. She is tall and I like that. A few bulges at the appropriate places would do a lot of good to her looks.

7. I had a few GSB friends in Mumbai when it was Bombay. The Women folk of GSB are a mixed lot. There are dusk and tall as well as fair and short woman evenly distributed among the Gowda Saraswats. They are generally a resourceful lot and are very friendly. I still am in touch with a few of them. They are great friends. Deepika is just another GSB girl.

To write an epilogue:

A woman/girl should look very vulnerable (not masculine and smashing) and feminine to grab and retain the attention of a man.

Please read carefully. I said "a woman/girl should look very vulnerable............". LOL.

According to a report on Bollywoodlife.com, TV actress, Manasi Joshi Roy has expressed that she is uncomfortable with the idea of being open to have sex outside marriage as said by Deepika Padukone in her 'My Choice' video. Reacting on the video, the wife of TV actor Rohit Roy said that such an attitude will be called adultery in a committed relationship. She added that if such a video featuring men was released on a public platform, there would have been much outrage over the same. Elaborating on the issue, Manasi said that if the rules change for one, there is an imbalance in the relationship. The actress has asked an explanation for the lines in the video, without which she terms the idea to be 'lopsided feminism.'

But Manasi is not the only actress talking against the video.

It is such a kiccku for me at least when a man is masculine but has a feminine streak..and it gives me an irresistible hidden desire to actually make such a male wear a lipstick!...but sadly I have not carried out this fantasy cos I know no male will ever agree!LOL

So Vaagmi ji..... now you know at least one woman's hidden desire!LOL
