A month ago, he called himself Shyam Singh. Now he declares himself “Azad” (liberated). The symbolic name not only sums up his situation, but is also his new identity. Shyam, a member of the Dalit Valmiki community in Moga village of Meerut, converted to Islam two weeks ago.

A landless labourer, he didn’t convert only because the community was denied access to a prominent Valmiki temple, located in nearby Baghpat district, to perform the traditional puja.

He changed his faith also because of the “continuous threats and harassment” he and his fellow community members had to face from the local law and order officials after he persisted with his demand to have the right to perform puja at the temple. The temple is controlled by the dominant Yadav community, and the priests had problems with the Valmikis performing puja. After their efforts to get equal rights failed, they announced that they would convert to Islam. Last week, the Meerut administration booked Shyam and his family for “disturbing peace and communal harmony” by persisting with their demand to perform puja at the temple and the announcement about converting to Islam.

In November last year, Shyam and his community members were told by the priest that they didn’t have any rights to perform puja.

‘What is the point in being a Hindu if I can’t enter a temple’

Since November last year, Shyam has petitioned the District Magistrates of Baghpat and Meerut, and the National Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. He also petitioned the Prime Minister’s Office. “What is the point in being a Hindu and having this sacred thread around my wrist if I can’t even enter a temple and perform puja,” he argued.

While Shyam has converted to Islam, his fellow Valmikis, numbering over 100, are scared and don’t want to raise the issue. They are thinking of migrating to some other part of the State to escape official harassment. Shyam himself now plans to migrate to Nepal.

Interestingly, the announcement of the conversion plan by Shyam and his fellow Dalits provoked immediate attention from right-wing Hindu outfits, which requested them not to convert.

“All of them wanted us not to convert to Islam, but none of them want us to get equal status among Hindus. This is how we have historically and traditionally been cheated,” said Shyam. Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Baghpat, Rajendar Singh told The Hindu that the Valmikis were denied permission to perform the elaborate puja in their own style as it was a “new” religious tradition.

Denied temple access, Dalit converts to Islam - The Hindu

Why in this day and age we are not able to accommodate the aspirations of all Hindus? And then why do we need to make a big spectacle or charade of GharVapasi?

oh well!! what do you expect. there is a question of human dignity which is what dalits have been saying right from dr ambedkar onwards. except dr A rejected islam and opted for buddhism, which appears less threatening to hindus. just imagine if all the dalits converted to islam as they did in east bengal.

a wake up call for hindus, but not sure if the shock is strong enough to change their minds about the essential evil of manu and his so called 'dharma'. it is anything but that. i think so.

even decades after independance, life of dalits has not changed much.

they are left with no alternative to change of religion.

the dignity that is denied to them in hindu religion, they get in other religions

Very sad to read this...but I do not blame him for his decision to convert.

How long does a Dalit have to suffer in his own religion that denies him the dignity of a human being?

Its all talk and no action by Hindus right till today...everyone still claims people convert for money but the truth is many have converted for dignity too.

Its high time we Hindus learn to treat everyone equally.

Entering into a temple is different,

Worshiping is different,

Performing Puja is different.

Incidentally, I would like to members to go thro the following link which also discusses the same issue published in another daily wherein the
temple priest Mahant Lakhyadevanand has also been quoted as saying that there is no dispute over worshipping within the temple. However, there is no clarity on allowing the shobha yatra to be taken out over a stretch of land leading to the temple.

Medias are known to exaggerate things with an ulterior motive to sensationalise the issue.

In a new phenomenon, deprived sections of the Hindu community have been threatening to quit Hinduism and embrace other religions if their demands, which are secular in character, were not met.
Recent incidents in Agra and Meerut suggest that Dalits, Valmikis and others have found a new weapon to get their social or development demands addressed by the political dispensation.

Great to read this...Dalits should hold others ransom cos the Ghar Wapsi is politically motivated..its never going to earn a Dalit any extra points anywhere.

When someone is making a Dalit a pawn in their political game..its should be the Dalit who says Check Mate to them!

Good..Dalits should keep it up and make sure they are not being made use of for others to gain political mileage.

Non Dalits should keep emotions out of this and try to look at this situation from a Dalits point of view.

a wake up call for hindus, but not sure if the shock is strong enough to change their minds about the essential evil of manu and his so called 'dharma'. it is anything but that.

This argument will not wash. Manu has nothing to with this or such irrational acts.

. Manu has nothing to with this or such irrational acts.

Manu smriti has not very kind words about some castes.

When I read it in Sanskrit for the first time I had to close it and not look at it for sometime..then it took me a lot of guts to read it fully.

I did not really enjoy what I was reading. Some verses were actually nauseating!

For example there is a verse that talks about sentencing a Sudra..that is to know if a Sudra is guilty he needs to hold a hot rod or be made to drowned in water..if he is innocent he would not get burnt or he would not get drowned.

For the same crime other castes just get away with a fine.

Manu smirti is really detail..they even talk about sexual crimes done on unmarried girls by women!

BTW if the victim is a Sudra girl and the sexual offender is a higher caste male he gets less punishment but if the victim is a higher caste woman. the male gets a more severe punishment. Its very biased and totally unfair...totally disrespecting Sudra women.

So my dear Sarang ji...I guess may be you could try re reading it.
