Does Science promote peace..?

My daughter participated in a debate in her school, in 2006, in Tamil. The topic was "Science causes Peace or Disturbance". She spoke saying science causes disturbance. This is a translated version of her speech.

That science causes disturbance is not told by me; it is by bible. "As soon as Adam bit the Apple of wisdom(read science), he sinned" says Bible. The science monster that came out of human brain has made man a machine and has become the master of man. As the man who caught the tail of a tiger is eaten by it, science has swallowed man.Science is a handle-less knife. U cut with it fruits, friends or foes, it will always hurt u.

In every positive that science gives us, there is a negative. I will list 3 main charges against science.

My first charge is science makes humans fools. We do not live in times where we mix and grow with nature. Our natural instincts are all dead. How much of food to eat, How much of water to drink, all need to be learned in school.Science has created a veil between us and nature, destroyed our natural instincts and made us fools. We have become so foolish that we need to learn and practise how to breathe from experts!!!!!

My second charge is science makes humans slaves. Think of it. To sleep, u need electricity. Is it not needed..? U dont eat or drink petrol. But without petrol, we can't eat or drink in today's world. Is it not true..? From the times we ate our food as medicines, we have descended into a time, where our medicines are our food. Science has enslaved the human civilizations to equipments and procedures.

My third charge is science destroys human relationships and values. Once there was a time, we read, that even to make sesame balls, lot of people are required in a family. In those times, we read that people got together and pulled the temple chariot. Humans lived together out of neccessity. Today science has enabled us to do all our things independently and we are all living in our hi-fi holes. We see on mails, talk on telephone and communicate via chat.

We are better off talking to machines than talking to flesh and blood people. We have become machines ourselves. Values like kindness, compassion have all been replaced by cost-effectiveness and profit. Economics first ; Everything else second.

Now a thing which makes us fools, makes us slaves, destroys our relationships and values; the least to describe it is disturbance.. Is it not..?

Science does not make us fools but after gaining some amount of knowledge we will realize that we actually know nothing much..so I would rephrase that and say >>My first charge is science makes us realize we are bloody fools!

My second charge is science makes humans slaves..
Desire enslaves humans..so don't blame science.

My third charge is science destroys human relationships and values.
Now way man! Through Yahoo messenger,Skype,Facebook,Googletalk people have even fallen in love and got married...so science fosters relationships and values.


Now a thing which makes us fools, makes us slaves, destroys our relationships and values; to least to describe it is disturbance.. Is it not..?

The debate was surely held in a school hall equipped with microphones, sound systems,computers, bottled drinking water and people would have recorded it in their handphones and uploaded it in youtube..the debaters themselves would have Google searched data for their debate.

We ourselves are sitting typing in Forum becos of science otherwise we will be still using pigeons to send sms to each other!LOL

There is no knowledge that is not from God...Treat Science as a knowledge and control our own desires..that is the Science of Self Realization!

haha!, Hinduism is a way of life. the analogy being. earlier man was worshiping it as a religion and now-a-days it has permeated into his day to day activities. Religion has become a way of life.

Greetings.

It is a very long time since I am coming across such a juicy opening post!

So, what was the sin did Adam commit after eating the Apple of wisdom? He viewd Eve as a sesual woman! He made love to her!
From the same Bible one would read... God created Adam first, then created Eve as his companion and said " procreate!"... But when he did proctreate, that action became 'the sin'! I don't know about others... I think, making love is a gift of nature, it is an art to be mastered. If that is the sin, then it is a cool sin! The whole world works only for that sin! If the male need not attract a female, need not make a female happy, then he may not bother earning at all. The whole civilisation would cease in few years.

First charge - Science helped so many persons to start breathing when they stopped breathing. People like scince call it CPR. I have done that few times and I know. No movement, no breathing, ash coloured skin... by the time we did two sets of compressions ( 30 per set) the colour is back, pulse is back... after adrenalin.... the person may comeback coughing! Fools if the like to stay that way, noone can help them.

Second charge - We don't need electricity to sleep. We can't sleep without fan! There was a time I used to sleep wherever, whenever.... If we are tired enough, we sleep pronto! There are still people who don't take much of medicine.

Third charge - Temple chariots were not pulled by persons for a long time now. It gets motorised. Developments are there for people to enjoy and have meaningful good time. Some persons are fortunate to have huge loving families.. there are people who have no such luck... what can science do or not do?

I pondered the points to some extent....
