Don't Choose Your Guru

You thinking ‘this is my Guru’ or ‘that is my Guru’ is of no great significance. When your inner situation becomes such that you really have no choice and you don’t consciously think ‘this is my Guru’, but in every way he has become that, then he is your Guru. In spite of yourself, when you are involved helplessly, then you have found your Guru. You don’t have to declare ‘this is my Guru,’ but when an awareness grows within you, naturally there is an acceptance of that.

Don’t try to choose your Guru. When you are choiceless about it and there is no other way for you, only then do you need a Guru. If you can still choose, don’t choose one because your choice will definitely be wrong because if you choose logically, you will choose a Guru who is convenient and comfortable for you. A Guru is somebody who takes your life, not somebody who offers you comfort. He is somebody who takes you, completely destroys and demolishes you in every way, and still he is your friend.

Generally a friend is a person who supports your ego. Those are the kind of friends that you choose. So friends are not good for you in the real sense because they support your ego in so many ways. But a Guru is a friend who demolishes your ego. So if you do not find him comfortable but you are helplessly attracted to him, only then is he your Guru.

I've read somewhere that we don't actually choose our gurus. They choose us. When the student is ready, the teacher will appear.....

we can not choose our guru and we should have the grace of good guru bestowed on us . in this line only we have read many stories about shisyas to get anugraha of that guru.If you want or not want a guru ,the turning point in your life with HIS blessing will show who is your Guru.

A Guru can appear in any form.
We should not limit ourselves to the thought that only a learned person will be our Guru.

Small things in life do add up and anyone or even an animal can be our Guru.

I will share this story with all here.

When I was a teen we had a dog but we had to travel outstation frequently cos both my paternal grandparents were bed ridden and we used to visit them very often.

So the dog used to be left alone and my father's friend used to come and give it food but sometimes my father's friend might not come and my dog had to go to the nearby jungle along with the wild dogs there to look for food.

So my dog became friends with lots of wild dogs..in fact his mate was a wild dog.

But my father felt bad that the dog sometimes went without food when we were outstation so my father decided to send the dog away to a farm which was some 20 km away from home.

My brothers and I felt sad to see the dog leave.
Even his mate was very sad and she went back to the jungle.

After 3 months one day I heard my dog bark outside the house.
I was shocked to see him!!
He had traced his way back home and I was over joyed to see him.
He barked so loud and his mate heard him and also came from the jungle.

I put some food for my dog cos he looked very thin I guess tracing his way back and walking some 20 km over a couple of days would have made him thin.

The house where I lived as a teen was near a jungle and lots of monkeys used to come daily too and they were friends with my dog.

When I put food for my dog to eat..I saw my dog use his paw and divide the food for his mate and the monkeys and he made them eat first and he only ate the balance.

Here I saw a dog which was hungry,tired and walked 20km to reach home and still thought of his mate and his monkey friends.

Truly a selfless act.

So I could say that my dog was also a Guru cos he showed me what being selfless is all about.

Renuka,

So I could say that my dog was also a Guru cos he should me what being selfless is all about.

My experience was just the opposite. At one stage, a dog was my guru too. But at that time the situation was, I turned my back to that dog, walked away few steps and came back as a different person ( psychologically); that dog realised that but still had no time to clear itself.. I kicked it out of the way.. A new leaf was turned in my life.

Cheers!

Greetings.

.. but seriously I don't think any guru would touch me even with an eight feet pole. If I really want to have a guru, who knows, I may have to ask that person very politely... " kindly become my guru, please. or else!"....

Cheers!

OMG you actually kicked a dog?
Poor dog yaar..what did it do to you?

When you meet a true Guru..even if you have hostile thoughts nothing will work.
Your whole body will be "paralyzed" and you will meekly acknowledge your preceptor.

Yes, I did. I was down.. way down at one time. So down, almost 'bye bye time and full of bye bye thoughts'. It rained for couple of days and there was only a small strip on the road free of water. Either one walked on that narrow strip or had to get in the water. I was walking on that road.. zero self confidence.. way down.. I was secreting all the chemicals body produced when one is depressed.. this dog was lying on that strip.. he looked up at me, showed so much dis interest and curled back on the same strip.. message was clear.. " you! walk around me!".. I just stood there few seconds.. realiosed if I don't win that dog, I will never win anything in life ( if there was any life left after that day, that was).. I deliberately turned back, walked away few steps then dragged all my energies from the reserve and walked back.. that dog realised.. too late.. kicked him across to the full width of the street and walked on... I had to win my psychological fight with a street dog before I could clawed my way back in life.

Cheers!

I never have 'hostile' thoughts towards anyone at anytime. One has to really push me to the corner before I strike.. once I clear the cornered situation, I loose interest in fights.

I don't remember meeting anyone to fit those descriptions explained by you... may not happen ever.

Cheers!

Hey poor dog ok! He did not do anything to you.

I thought that may be you kicked a dog which was trying to bite you or something.

Poor animal...how could you hurt him?

Becos you knew it was a poor helpless dog and he can't do much to you..you kicked him isn't it?
Just imagine if it was a Lion or Tiger sitting there would you still dare go up and kick it?

If your mind is shut even while having sight one might not still see.
So never say never!LOL

Actually with that frame of mind I had on that day, I would have.

Had I not kicked that dog out of the way, I would have died. I needed that boost up of self confidence. That dog didn't mind, you know? It just had to learn who was the boss. And that in turn taught me my lesson in life.

Cheers!

I don't know Renuka. My mind may be shut; or may be wide open... I haven't a clue! Seriously, I have not iota of spiritual thought in me. Why would any guru waste time on me? Chances are Guru would risk ending up gulping JD with me! Let's talk about realistic things, please!

Cheers!

Hey you still haven't answered my question!

Would have dared to kick a Lion or Tiger sitting on the road..the same way you kicked the dog?

JD Gurus are found everywhere..just make a person gulp down a few pegs of JD and watch Tattvam flow from him.

That's why in India..there is an alcohol by the name Black Dog Teacher's Choice.

They just know it that once you gulp it you become a GuruJi!!LOL

[h=1]இயற்கையே நம் குரு![/h]
இகழ்வாரைத் தாங்கும் பொறுமை கற்போம்;

நெருப்பைப் போன்றது ஆத்மா என்று அறிவோம்;

மர்மம் என்ன என்று ஆகாசத்திடம் கற்போம்;

சூரியன் போன்றதே ஆத்மா, அறிந்திடுவோம்;

தினமும் காணும் குளவியிடம் கற்போம்;

MOTHER NATURE…THE GREATEST GURU!

Nature is the best teacher to anyone who wishes to evolve spiritually.

Just by keeping our eyes and ears open, we can learn many lessons from Mother Nature.

The earth supports the person who digs deep into her womb. Let us learn the virtue of Patience from Mother Earth.

The water cools, cleanses and purifies. It lets the dirt settle down and becomes pure again. Let us learn the art of cleansing and remaining clean from water.

Fire is hidden in every object around us. Under the right conditions they will start burning. Let us learn the truth that Atman is hidden in every object around us just like the element of Fire.

Air dissipates and carries various fragrances and odors but does not get attached to any of them. Let us learn the art of doing our work without getting attached to them.

The sky pervades everywhere-inside and outside every object. Neither does it defile any of those things nor does it get defiled by them. Let us learn the secret of Nirmalathvam from Aakaasam.

The sea is so deep, so majestic and so silent, in spite of holding so many treasures in her womb. Let us learn from the sea to be silent and serene .

If we place 100 pots filled with water we can see the reflection of the Sun in each of the pots. Let us learn the truth that Atman is one but it is illuminating every jeevan just as the Sun does the water in the pots.

The Moon waxes and wanes. The sareera of any jeeva is constantly changing, growing and deteriorating. Let us learn from the Moon the fact that sareeram is not constant or permanent.

The spider spins a web from the silk produced in its body. It can also take back the web into its body. Let us learn the fact the God created the universe from His own self during Srushti and will take back everything into Himself during Pralaya.

The worm becomes a wasp, just by thinking about it. Let us learn from the wasp the fact that we become what we keep thinking about.

A python never leaves its tree. It just eats any prey that happens to walk close by. Let us learn to eat what comes our way and not go searching for fancy food stuff.

The honey bees work all day long, gather nectar and convert it to honey. They make more honey than what they may need and store it. The greedy human being kills the bees and take their honey. Let us learn from the honey bees the lesson that hoarding too much of wealth may endanger our lives.

If we remain alert and observant we can learn many valuable lessons from Mother Nature!

Dear Raghy,

I have a question for you.

What is so great about JD that you seem to love it so much?
