New research points to dangers of 'going in the pool'

I am not sure how many people swim in pools these days in India but it is a worldwide problem

Here is the latest information from an article in the scientific American. The link provided has a Youtube video as well

=======================================

In the summertime, when the weather is fine, you may have swimming on your mind. A swimming pool dip can cool you off. But some other bodily functions may produce unhealthy chemical reactions. Urinating in a chlorinated pool can lead to small amounts of chemicals that might irritate your lungs, according to this new video fromBreakthrough Science and the American Chemical Society.
The culprit is uric acid in urine, says chemist Ernest Blatchley of Purdue University, who admits in the video that he has peed in a pool. But he doesn’t anymore, and not just because it is impolite. He and some colleagues discovered that uric acid and chlorine interact to produce small amounts of cyanogen chloride and trichloramine. When inhaled in large volumes these chemicals can damage internal organs. The amount of these chemicals that can be made by the typical amount of urine released by a swimmer–30 to 80 milliliters–is much smaller than anything that has been linked to physical harm, Blatchley hastens to say. But particularly in indoor pools, it is possible they could cause some irritation, he says. He and his colleagues originally reported these results in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.
Peeing in the ocean should be worry-free, however. That’s according to somereporting by Lauren Wolf, an editor at Chemical & Engineering News. Urine, she notes, is largely water and salt–and that happens to be, largely, what seawater is made from. There isn’t anything like chlorine in ocean water to trigger a bad reaction. Plus, she notes, fish and whales are doing a lot of ocean urinating on their own.

Come on, TKS ji. This is like saying Sun rises in the east! :)

Should it be moved to chit-chat section?

It is the first time a serious research study has been undertaken to show toxicity of interaction with Chlorine in swimming pools. It is one thing that it is a sick thing to think about. It is another thing that this is toxic and bad causing problems like Asthma etc,

Wish there was a test to detect level of this toxic substance in a pool !

In 35 years or so as an 'outsider' visiting India I am always amazed at changes - some are progress or some may be going backwards. The idea of walking for exercise in Sun during summer months even in the morning was not a concept I was familiar with while growing up.

Some 20 years ago I saw many Mamas of all vintages wearing ill fitting half-drawer (?) or shorts trying to walk at breakneck speed but crawling ..at Chennai places - it was a funny to say the least when I first witnessed these changes in life styles.

Then came the whole revolution of gyms where many equipment were locally copied from the west and produced for exercise.

Added to this is the idea of many TB types going for a Massage which is an alien thing to me even now.

There used to be swimming pools here and there some three decades ago.

I do not know if swimming in the pool as a form of exercise has taken off in India - I suspect it is more prevalent now than it used to be three decades ago.

If swimming is an activity that people have taken up then this study is very important - stay away from those indoor pools that irritate your skin along with other symptoms described in the source paper referenced. It is not just the chlorine that is causing this, it is the human behavior that is causing the production of these toxic chemicals.

Outdoor pools may be safer in that respect.

In another study this bad habit is executed by a very large number - it is much more than 1 in 5.

I dont like swimming pools or temple ponds too cos I dont think any stagnant water is hygienic.

In India I have seen people take a dip in stagnant temple ponds and I used to wonder what could the bacteria count be? I am sure people urinate in temple ponds too cos many kids too jump in temple ponds and some even bathe there!

Somehow I like swimming in the sea..its always more fun..waterfalls are nice too.

The Sun,Sea and Sand has a kiccku that a swimming pool does not have!LOL

The Sun, Sea and Sand has a kikku only if you have your love by your side. A swimming pool does not need that. I enjoy an hour spent in a good swimming pool because the micro quantities of cyanogen released and inhaled wont do any harm to me. My immune system is strong enough and I take care to see that my mind does not create problems which will depress my immune system. A good shower post swimming takes care of the external cleanliness too.

Ha TKS Ji

Interesting - maybe you have access to a study on people 'passing wind' in a pool !!

Please enlighten us all on the effects of Apaana Vaayu dissolved in Chlorine rich water
with high levels of Uric Acid in it - anyone notice gas bubbles rising to the surface ?

The Doctor in Malaysia will probably have a stronger case for her "Poolophobia".

Yay Yem

Dear Vaagmi ji,

There is another Kiccku..that is swimming against current..that has a different feel altogether!

You wont get that kickku in a pool.

Dear AM ji,

I am not scared of pools..its just that I am not too fond of it.

Dear Renukaji,

That was a pretty fast one. LOL. There is no use swimming against the current in sea because you are always back where you started. So there is no kikku there. In flowing rivers , of course, you can try swimming against the current and the kikku may be there. In pools to compensate for the absence of flow and the kikku you get another kind of kikku if you have a few babes bathing in style. LOL.

Dear Vaagmi ji,

I actually dislike pools cos locker rooms are always sort of moist and one can pick up fungal infection of the feet..so I totally dislike pools and pools is also where men try to get to know us females..so we females already get too much attention anyway!..prefer outdoors where its all rough and wild!LOL

I prefer a Jacuzzi followed by Sauna & Steam..You can enjoy to your hearts content! No worry about crawling germs & viruses!

Renukaji,

I agree. But the hide and seek game is more interesting only upto a point, because there are man-eaters (or "man-eatresses"- LOL) prowling around.

The research topic is not an appealing one. It may seem even not worth discussing. We are tempted to make fun of such work. There is a bit of seriousness here though. Let me provide some context.

I am not sure if you are very familiar with Scientific American magazine.
It is extremely difficult for anyone in research to get their work published in Scientific American. Often topics of very significant impact get written for laymen in this publication. The same publishing company also manages research publications such as Nature.

This particular blog that I cited came in the latest edition (August 2014) of the print magazine along with their online versions. I do not know any more about this area than most people since my subject of R&D is different.

You can look up the original research article and reach out to the author for more information.

I have known people who have developed serious ailments perhaps in retrospect by regular use of indoor pools over decades. Hence I shared this news item as information.

Humor is fine, but let us not lose sight of the serious health risk for some people or the seriousness of such findings.

If one in five or four do this distasteful thing then many readers here might have done this. My reason for this post is to not just avoid the pool but avoid doing this which has more serious side effect on the health of few people.

Last week, I think, there was a report that when the obnoxious deed is done, a bright florescent patch will rise and the offender will be caught yellow handed.
Will try to fish out the study!
