In the ongoing Engineering admissions, which concluded on Tuesday, with few more counselling on Wednesday and Thursday, 1,01,620 seats were allotted.

Some interesting information:

* 91,473 seats have fallen vacant,which does not take into account
management quota.
* Only 10% of colleges fill all seats in various streams.
* More than 50% of the students are first generation students, and a
third of the students this year are girls.
* 28 colleges had shut down IT branches, students opted for civil and
mechanical engg.
* 60 of the 471 colleges offering these branches had filled up all
seats.

In the past if you did Engineering you were considered a VIP ( i.e a Very Important Person ) but today if you do Engineering you will soon become a VIP (i.e Vela Illa Paatadhari ) .

Very much a discouraging signal to the management of the private colleges that there may not be much demand for payment seats.

But students should be encouraged and made to realise that whatever situation prevails at present, if they work hard and become toppers in their chosen area of studies,a bright future is awaiting them.

What % of the Engg college students are actually becoming Engineers....Less than 20% , I guess...IT companies were the first recruiters when the software revolution kicked in the 90's..But with this getting dried up, the charm for Engg will fade..We actually require more generalists than Engineers...Engineering has to be a specialized stream.

One solution is to merge all branches - especially, mechanical, electrical, civil electronics, computer science and IT as many subjects are common, and offer optional specialization subjects, sort of integrated courses. IN the early days of computer, most of the software engineers in india and usa, were from the mechanical engineering branch - do the flow chart, write the code (auto code or fortran or cobal) in paper, and give it to an operator for entry or punch cards. A commerce or finance man will give the rules for finance and the mechanical engineer will take it upto coding level.

Except the complex and knowledge domain part of design - electronic circuits, mechanical design, fem or design analysis - rest of the work can be done by general engineers with frequent update training. Designers need special knowledge skills and a good grasp of mathematics, theoretical principles in the area of their work.

There are more mobile sale/repair shops than pan shops; and each shop can dismantle any model mobile phone, diagnose the fault and repair minor problems.

There is a severe shortage of skilled technicians in all fields.

Better use the infrastructure of engg colleges to offer skill based training at low cost for industry.

We can reduce the intake of engineers by atleast 50 percent in all states.

Similar situation existed in the past also. It is vicious .
