94% pickpockets nabbed in Delhi Metro are women !

An overwhelming majority of pickpockets - 94% - caught in the Delhi Metro network this year are women, official data has revealed.

Figures compiled by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) for 11 months, from January to November, show that a total of 293 women pickpockets were held as compared to 22 men in metro in the national capital region.

The CISF is the designated nodal force for securing the Delhi Metro network, platforms and rail coaches.

“Women pickpockets have been dominating the Delhi Metro premises. It has been found that they camouflage their intentions by deploying a clever modus operandi of accompanying a child or carrying a toddler. In most cases it was found that the women who were apprehended after the act of stealing were the least doubtful,” a senior official said.

The CISF, which is tasked with securing the 134 Metro stations in the NCR, hand over these men and women to the local police for action under law. The rise in numbers of women pickpockets has been a subject of challenge for security agencies in the Metro network including the CISF as the figures for last year also depict a similar trend.

Last year, of the total 466 pickpockets held across stations of the Delhi metro, 421 were women. CISF personnel also recovered over Rs. 29.56 lakh in cash, cheques/drafts of value of over Rs. 9 crore, foreign currency worth Rs. 86,683, gold ornaments and other valuables worth more than Rs. 16 lakh from the transit system this year.

94% pickpockets nabbed in Delhi Metro are women

Not Surprised . Many years back ( in early 90s ) one of our relatives who regualrly used to travel in Bus in Chennai to her office said that the trend of pickpocketing has shifted and more women are getting involved in the same in Chennai buses . She also said many do not suspect the women and this is an advantage for them . I do not know how the scene in Chennai right now in buses as I hardly travel in Buses .

An overwhelming majority — nearly 90 per cent — of the over 400 pick pocketing cases last year on the metro involved women perpetrators

Most of them are suave and well-educated, making it difficult to profile them, says the Delhi Police
With 26 of the 27 pickpockets held in Delhi Metro trains last month being women, the trend of their involvement in such crimes is growing.

An overwhelming majority — nearly 90 per cent — of the over 400 pick pocketing cases last year on the metro involved women perpetrators.

No organised gangs

A Delhi Police officer said most detected cases were not carried out by organised gangs, but isolated in nature. On the growing trend itself, a police officer said women took advantage of the fact that few passengers even suspected that they could commit such a crime.
“Many of them are suave and come across as well-educated, making it difficult to profile them,” he said.

The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is in-charge of Delhi Metro security, has also been profiling women offenders to curb the menace of pick pocketing.

An officer said they discovered that pick pocketing takes place on metro lines leading to busy market places.

“For instance, Yellow Line stations such as Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar have a huge footfall and hence provide the pickpocket more options. Another reason they choose such stations is because a lot of outsiders come here for business,” the officer said.

Then there are stations such as New Delhi, Anand Vihar or Kashmere Gate, which are connected to either broad gauge railway networks or Inter-State Bus Terminals and hence are frequented by many outsiders. Within the metro, the crowded general compartments is where the majority of pick pocketing takes place, the officer added.

CCTV footage

In most reported cases, the accused are caught red-handed, but the police said at times CCTV footage also helps nab the suspects.
Since provisions of the Indian Penal Code dealing with theft are slapped against those arrested, many come out on bail or after serving short sentences and return to doing what they know best.

Repeat offenders

The CISF has been trying to track down these repeat offenders.

“Their pictures are clicked and compiled in a digest form. These digests are then sent to all stakeholders, including the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and the Delhi Metro Police. While having a previous record of such crimes itself cannot be a reason to deny a commuter entry, the digest aids our personnel in profiling and better monitoring. This ensures that habitual offenders are detected easily,” a CISF officer explained.

Any info about Chennai? I don't think Chennai women will be as daring!
Yeah! They are daring!

Once while I was travelling in a bus - not very crowded, a huge built woman dashed from behind and I lost my balance for a few

seconds. Then I managed by holding the railing above. Soon after getting down, I noticed that the zip of my handbag was open

and one of the purses stolen! Luckily, the purse with heavy cash was kept underneath and escaped from that lady pickpocket!

So, the loss was in hundreds only!

After this incident, I never travel by bus when I go for shopping but take an auto.
